Razorlight + Housse de Racket @ Bataclan Nov 30th 2008

French beauties from the first row & Johnny " Pete Townshend " Borrell

It looks like Razorlight are no more media darling or even the audience's darling as the promoter was trying desperately to fill up the Bataclan offering 2 tickets for the price of one on some websites selling tickets.
There's more people ( around 1000 ) than for Dirty Pretty Things a few days ago but the balcony is closed ( reserved for 20 VIPs in fact ).
French band Housse de Racket opened, they are a novelty act but are doing pretty good in France with a hit single so they are a bit more serious now. Only 2 guys : one on drums and one on guitar ( a fly V )and vintage keyboard , all dressed in white.
Nice set with their 80's sounding music ( especially the keyboard ).
After playing the tiny Maroquinerie ( capacity 500 ) a couple of months ago , Razorlight is back in Paris @ the Bataclan , they've already played here on their last tour and the place was packed. What Happened ?
All dressed in black now Johnny's rocking the girls down the front without doing too much , he doesn't strip anymore and now has nice clothes ( see picture ) , it's an improvement from last tour when he was dressed like shit with his ridiculous INXS white tee-shirt and white trouser -white sneakers .
They are a bit more rock on stage with a couple of blues orientated songs ( one of their songs sounds like "Gloria " ) and others with a WHO feeling . But they're still pop.
See picture for complete SETLIST .

The music is awright , not fantastic but entertaining.
They've added a guy on piano and a girl on keyboard and backing vocals to nice effect.
Good show but a bit too light for me.
NB : The whole show was recorded on video by a cameraman working for Razorlight from the balcony.

Razorlight 's setlist & stage plan

Last song of the show " Somewhere else " :

Here's another video from the Bataclan : " Burberry Blue Eyes"

Tomorrow night, hard to make a choice between The Bellrays @ Trabendo and The Rascals @ Maroquinerie : both bands are really good.

PETE DOHERTY @ Maroquinerie Nov 28th 2008

UPDATED Saturday 29th with 2 NEW VIDEOS

Breaking News:
Roses Kings Castles will play the Truskel in Paris on Dec 3rd

Pete Doherty
solo @ Paris' tiny Maroquinerie ( 500 capacity ) , it's been announced a couple of days ago and was Sold-Out in a few hours.
Pete arrived at the venue around 8 pm for a quick soundcheck.

He was on stage and played one song ( Love's cover " Alone agian or " ) before introducing a french young guitar player ( Miggles ) who did 3 songs on his own . ( very average )

Pete came back on stage to do one more song ( " Beg , steal or borrow " ) before introducing the next support slot : A french trio ( The Nellingtons ) that was complete crap ( they even slaughtered " Mr Tambourine man " ). They were sooo bad that the audience started throwing shit at them .

Pete was welcome back for his concert straight after that shitty french "band" .
A few new songs , some oldies and a cover by the LA's ' there she goes ".
Nice atmosphere here , people requested songs he did them. He invited one of his friend to sing , WOLFMAN for a couple of songs, the poor guy was so out of it that he barely could open his eyes.

Motorhead @ Zénith Paris Nov 25th 2008

I arrived a bit late at the Zénith and had problems getting my ticket from the guest list ( Bastards ) so I missed the first 20 min of the show.
It's a small zénith ( 4000 ) but it's SOLD OUT .
For once with Motorhead the sound is clear and not too loud.
Beautiful stage set up with a drum riser and 2 screens ( a first for Motorhead ).
No Bomber tonight as Mickey told us , in his dressing room after the show , that it costs 10 000 dollars a show. It needs its own truck and 3 people to operate it .
Nevertheless with Motorhead it's "No mercy for the wicked" , a 300 mph show .
95 min of ultimate Rock ' n Roll for your ears .
A couple of new songs AND LOTS OF CLASSICS . ( see setlist )
Fuckin' AWSOME !!!

Motorhead's Setlist

We went ( with Gael ) backstage into Mickey Dee's dressing room with a few girls. had a chat with him for an hour. We all left to the Guinness Tavern in Paris for a few ( well lots of ... ) drinks.
Mickey joined the houseband for Noir Désir's "Tostaky" , a song he had never heard of ... and played it perfectly . He later played a Stones ' song ( can't remember which one ! ). We left him at 5 am outside the pub as they were taking a cab for another location , i needed to sleep a bit.
That's what i call ROCK 'N FUCKING ROLL

Rocking @ Guinness Tavern
Video from Paris :

Bruce Dickinson Press conference in Paris

Bruce Dickinson , lead singer in IRON MAIDEN is in Paris to promote the release on dvd of his movie " A chemical wedding " : http://www.chemicalweddingmovie.co.uk/
A story about Aleister Crowley's ressurection .
Screening @ 6 pm and press conference @ 8 pm ( we're gonna be late for Motorhead ).
Bruce seems to know A LOT about Aleister Crowley.
The atmosphere is very relax in this small private cinema in front of Europe 1 radio near the Champs Elysées .
Too bad I have to leave before the end to go to ... MOTORHEAD.

Dirty Pretty Things @ Bataclan Paris Nov 25th 2008

Last show in Paris before the split @ Bataclan .

The marquee ( left ) and fan (right )

Dirty Pretty Things decided to split a couple of months ago and to finish their European tour.
They've never been on top commercially or musically , just above average. So Carl decided to give up. The perspective of seeing the last show in Paris didn't motivate Carl's fans as the Bataclan is far from being full , the balcony is closed.
A little bit less than a 1000 people tonight but lots of ( beautiful ) girls ( see pictures ).
I've never been a great fan of the DPT , they never could match the Libertines or Babyshambles who have ( had ) more commercial success.
DPT have too many average songs and the concert tonight didn't change my mind at all.
They rock but something is missing in their music.
Nice show but nothing that fantastic.
They've played extra encores including Nirvana's "In Bloom" and a couple of Libertines songs.
Just hope that Carl will come back with a stronger band , I met him a few times and he's one of the nicest & coolest musician i have ever met.
Charming Girl waiting for a kiss from Carl ?

Marianne Faithfull @ Fnac Montparnasse Paris Nov 24th 2008

Late afternoon Marianne Faithfull is at the Montparnasse Fnac store to talk about her brand new cd " easy come , easy go ".
She's really relax and in the mood to talk, members from the audience asked a few questions and then she signed a few records.
Not that many people , around 100, so everything went smoothly.
Nice hour with this 60's icon.

Then we went to the Olympia for the first of 3 shows of Leonard Cohen in Paris.
160 euros for a ticket , no fucking way.

Here's an article from the BBC on my mate Ray Morrissey from London who has been to more thant 5000 gigs since 1973 and still rocking.

Tracy chapman + Joseph Arthur @ Folies Bergere Paris Nov 22nd 2008

Solo acoustic tour for Tracy Chapman, in Paris tonight in this beautiful theatre Les Folies Bergere.

Joseph Arthur

Very nice surprise as i'm getting into Les Folies Bergere , someone is giving me a flyer telling me that Joseph Arthur is opening. Saw him last month with his band @ the Album de la semaine and i really appreciate his rock music.
Tonight he's on his own playing acoustic, the lightning is crap just one spot on him. Nice show , he's even taking requests. The audience welcomes him very nicely.
Here's a video from Joseph Arthur :
http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=MVFr0V8-QxA

Tracy Chapman

First solo acoustic tour for Tracy Chapman in ten years. same lightshow as Joseph with a few lightbulbs hanging from the ceilings.
She' s got the songs , the voice and she's always telling funny stories between songs, some political ( on Obama ) some about her journey in Paris ... I had a perfect seat : first row in the first box on the left so the view was perfect. She doesn't overplay on guitar , just what is needed .
The atmosphere is quite hot as every of her song is welcome to rousing applause , she has very dedicated fans and it's no surprise that this show was long Sold-out ( she added another show at the Palais des Congres on Dec 19th 2008 Sold-out too).
So the show was perfect for me even though i don't know her repertoire that much.
She ended the gig with " talkin' about a revolution " and Ben E King 's " Stand by me ".
SETLIST
01. I Am Yours
02. Sing For You
03. For My Lover
04. Across The Lines
05. Crossroads
06. Something To See
07. The Promise
08. Subcity
09. Fast Car
10. House Of The Rising Sun
11. Give Me One Reason
12. Save Us All
13. Talkin’bout a Revolution
Encore
14. She’s Got Her Ticket
15. Stand By Me

Here's a good site on Tracy :
http://www.about-tracy-chapman.net/

So now let's see what 's wrong with the lady : First : no pictures are allowed AT ALL. Security was very strict about it ( France television was only allowed to film one song and were not allowed to film when she's walking to the stage ( ? )). Second: no one is allowed to film support band in case you film the lightshow ( ??? What light show ? a few fuckin' lightbulbs ? ). She may seems nice on stage but she's been acting like a fucking diva. No one's allowed to approach her and when she gets somewhere the room is clear by her watchdogs .
What kind of fucking attitude is that !!!
The only time i've been given flyer prior to a show telling the audience that anyone taking pictures during her performance will be thrown out of the venue was at one of her gig a couple of years ago at the zénith. It was a First in more than 20 years of concerts .

A big thank you to our fellow photographer Patrice Guino , he has risk his life for you to take a few pics. so enjoy !

The BellRays + Charles Walker's Dynamites +The Puppini Sisters + Vigon + Kitty Daisy & Lewis @ La Musicale Paris Nov 21st 2008

Just back from the second recording of " La Musicale " . Both recordings will be edited for one TV Show broadcasted on Dec 23rd .
Tonight no big names like yesterday ( Seal & Tom Jones ) but it was a KILLER.
The BellRays , The Dynamites feat. Charles Walker , The Puppini Sisters , Vigon and youngsters Kitty daisy & Lewis .

First on are The Dynamites from Nashville featuring Charles walker ( introduced by MC Emma De Caunes as "Joe Walker" ). Great funk band à la James Brown .
http://www.myspace.com/thedynamitesband

Then we have the Mighty Bellrays , they don't need any introduction they fuckin' rock & soul but tonight is a special treat with two cool covers and an unexpected 3rd song that wasn't planned.
they're always great even though i prefer when they rock at 200 MPH.
http://www.myspace.com/thebellrays

Completely different style with The Puppini Sisters , these 3 girls are playing 40's style swing, great vocals nice outfit too.
http://www.myspace.com/puppinisisters

Vigon , this French Maroccan singer is a bit of a cult figure over here , he released a few singles and an album on Atlantic in the 60's and then completely disappeared for 40 years. He's back now as his album is finally out on cd now 40 years after its original release. Voice is fantastic a mix between Otis Redding and Sam Cooke . he broke down the house with his covers of Ray Charles' " I can't stop loving you " and Bob & Earl's " Harlem Shuffle" ( covered by the Stones ) Standing ovation , better response from the 400 strong audience than Seal and Tom Jones put together yesterday . He was the only artist to have an Encore over these 2 days of recording with Otis' " I can't turn you loose" .
VIGON RULES
Listen to that : http://www.myspace.com/vigon

Last artists to play are 3 young english , 2 sisters and their brother : Kitty Daisy & Lewis in their late teens playing early rock ' n Roll with their dad on guitar and mum on double bass : It's a family affair . they 've done a very good set too.
http://www.myspace.com/kittydaisyandlewis

I mean, it's hard to see 10 different artists playing different styles over two days and to like them all.
You know me i won't hesitate to say it if any of this bands were crap but they were all great.
Fantastic package for this Tv Show , Stéphane Saunier is always booking great bands for Canal+ on the " Album de la semaine ". He made the right choices for this one .

Here's the complete setlist :( based on technicians ' official setlist ).
Dynamites feat. Charles walker :
" Slinky " + " Cold sweat" .
The Bellrays : "you got the love " , " with a little bit of your love" + extra song " Santa's got a big old bag"
The Puppini Sisters : " boogie Woogie " , " Crazy in Love " + extra song " ? "
Vigon : "I can't stop loving you " , " harlem shuffle " + encore : " I can't turn you loose"
Kitty Daisy & Lewis : " going up the country " , " baby Hold me tight " , + song with brother on piano maybe " bugging blues " ???

sorry No Pictures it's forbidden

SEAL + Tom Jones + Eli Paperboy Reed + Alice Russell + Molly Johnson @ La Musicale Canal+ Nov 20th 2008

Nice bill for this Canal+ TV show " La Musicale" ( to be broadcast on Dec 23rd ) with :
SEAL , Tom Jones & less known artists Eli "Paperboy" Reed , Alice Russel and Molly Johnson.
The setting is a Cabaret with MC Emma De Caunes ( french actress and daughter of Antoine De Caunes famous in England for hosting the tv show Eurotrash with Jean Paul Gaultier ), Tables down the front, like in a cabaret, for VIPs and stalls in the back for the rest of us .

Many mentions were made of Obama's election and black and white mixing together , SO NICE but here you don't mix VIPs and normal punters. Around 300 people but lots of empty seats. They're dying to find people for tomorrow's recording .

It started very late and there were 15 min breaks between each band to move cameras from one stage to another so it was a real bore.

But the show was fantastic , each artist was absolutely great Seal started and played a few more songs that were originally planned ( see setlist ) , the guy seems very cool and he has an amazing voice .
Tom Jones
after busking in front of the RFH in London for charity yesterday is as smart as a Prince today in this Cabaret, playing 2 new songs and his hit " It's not unusual ".

Eli " Paperboy" Reed did his thing , he knows every of James Brown's tricks. Already saw him last month @ Canal+ 's " L' Album de la semaine ".
Listen to his songs here : http://www.myspace.com/elipaperboyreed
setlist part 1
Blond English soul singer Alice Russel played 3 songs including a very beautiful and very different cover of Gnarls Barkley's " Crazy " ( i've listened to this song so many times on the radio that i fucking hate it now ! ) Check her myspace she's doing a complete different cover of the White Stripes' " Seven nation army" : http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=53995913
Her voice is soulful and powerful, she sould be black.
setlist part 2
Jazz singer Molly Johnson ended the show in style with 2 songs.
Check here you' ll like her : http://www.myspace.com/mollyjohnsonmusic
GREAT NIGHT
Sorry No Pictures Totally forbidden

Tomorrow Same show with The Bellrays , the 40's swing vocal female group The Puppini Sisters, Rockabilly teenage trio Kitty Daysy & Lewis , funk singer Charles Walker & the Dynamites ( this guy opened for Etta James , James Brown , Wilson Pickett in the 60's ) and soul Maroccan singer Vigon ( He has a fantastic voice like Ottis redding had ).

KEANE @ RTL2 Paris Nov 19th 2008

Before playing tomorrow at the Zénith in Paris , Keane is playing a private show in the studios of French radio RTL2 in front of a selected audience of competition winners and VIP.
Around 200 people seated.

First there is a 15 min interview and then a 40 min show, i mean what can i say about this band ?
During the interview the singer said that the guitars were back,
What guitar ???
I've seen a guitar played on stage but i haven't heard it at all .
These guys have no charisma at all and the music they're playing is not that interesting , i though it might be good LIVE but no It really sucks but the girls love them.

setlist
Video of " is it any wonder ? " :
http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=JQceHBTOTN0

Tomorrow is very busy many gigs in Paris ,Nov 20th :
Todd Rundgren @ Trabendo ; The Yardbirds @ New Morning ; Girls in Hawaii @ Bataclan ;
Keziah Jones
is playing a private show @ studio SFR near Madeleine in Paris.

I' m going to a Canal+ TV Show " La Musicale" with Seal, Tom Jones, Alice Russel , Eli Paperboy Reed & Molly Johnson .
On the 21st same tv show with The BellRays, Kitty daisy Lewis , The Dynamites , the Puppini sisters & Vigon.

Oh forget to tell you that Pete Doherty was in Paris these last few days
staying in an hotel in Le Marais. He went to see the Kooks at the Zénith but i didn't see him.

The KOOKS + CSS + Mystery Jets + White Lies Festival des Inrocks Paris Zénith Nov 17th 2008

First row

Last day for the Festival des Inrocks , tonight it's the small Zénith but it's not sold-out, around 2500 people in here with a 70% female audience mainly between 14 and 18 years old , most of 'em very cute.

First band on is WHITE LIES , we arrived as they were finishing their last song so ...

Then we have Mystery Jets , they are making the effort to speak an almost perfect French , people seems to like them but they left me cold as ice, it might be because of the ridiculous outfit or the 80's style pop rock music.

CSS are next , this almost all female brasilian dance-rock band is very good on stage. i've seen them a few times and they've always been fun to watch.
On cd the music is not as exciting as it is Live. It's a pity.
CSS has a talented show-woman as singer and she's sexy .
Sad the lighning is crap most of their set is performed in the dark.
What the fuck was doing the light engineer ? , with this kind of music the lightshow should be like a bonfire for god's sake !!!

SETLIST CSS :

Last on stage are headliner The KOOKS. The girls LOOOOOOOOVE them .
Second concert in Paris this year , first one was in a sold-out Elysée Montmartre on April 15th.
Their Pop-Rock is a bit similar to the Babyshambles with more radio friendly songs.
Nice encore : the singer is back on stage to play 3 songs on the acoustic guitar ( including a new one ) on his own before being joined by the boys for a few more tunes.
Very good gig.

Jane Birkin @ Fnac Montparnasse Nov 17th 2008

A meeting in this store with english singer-actress Jane Birkin.
Nice chat about a brand new record.
Good news too Charlotte Gainsbourg ( her daughter with Serge Gainsbourg ) will go to New York shortly ( before Christmas ) to work on her next album.
She signed a few cds afterwards.

The Mabuses + Rachel Unthank @ Maroquinerie Paris Nov 16th 2008

First band to go on in an empty Maroquinerie ( 50 people ) is Rachel Unthank , 4 beautiful English girls ( a gorgeous blonde on piano , 2 lovely sisters on vocals and dance and a fatal brunette on accordion and violin ) in their twenties . They're playing traditionnal english folk songs.
Nice to hear completely different music once in a while.
Lead singer Rachel has a crystal clear voice. Very nice.
Robert Wyatt
loves them , they've played one of his song .
Rachel Unthank with sister Becky ( left ) Mabuses ' setlist (right )

When The Mabuses started the show more people had arrived ( around 100 ) , they've played to a devoted audience their Pop-rock-psyche .
Nice set too.

Daniel Darc Trabendo sessions Paris Nov 15th 2008

Daniel Darc is playing for Virgin 17 TV show Trabendo sessions.
There are a few gigs tonight in Paris Sigur Ros is playing the nearby Zénith, La Cigale welcomes another sold-out Inrocks festival...
The trabendo is really empty as i make my way in , no more than a 100 people in here , is it because it's saturday night ? Where are Daniel Darc's fans ?
It's a free gig for fuck's sake .
Oh... i forget to tell you that Daniel Darc is the former singer in french 80's band Taxy Girl. He's a character with tattoos all over his body.
He's playing with his mate for years Alice Botté on guitar and musicians from french band Asyl.

Nice hour Pop-rock show, as always in french music lyrics are very important , daniel has lived already several lives not for the better but he's ok now. He played a few songs from his recent cd but the concert wouldn't be perfect without Taxi Girl's only hit " Cherchez le garçon ".
Last song was " Psaume 23 " a -musical poem-

Legends Of Rock : Live at the Zénith in Paris , France Nov 14th 2008

Linda Gail Lewis , Jerry Lee Lewis & Chuck Berry.
Linda Gail Lewis sister of Jerry Lee

Amazing ! the Zénith in Paris is Sold Out , more than 5000 rockers for this concert of " Les Légendes du rock ". It's an all seated show , 50's rockers' fans are getting old.
For the last 3-4 years there are more and more youngsters when we're attending old rock bands like tonight or Classic Rock bands ( Robert Plant, the Who ... ) That's nice because it's something that never happened before .
First on stage is Linda , Jerry's sister , the set was OK, she dedicated a song to Little Richard, who was on the bill but couldn't performed as he's recovering after surgery.

SETLIST : Linda Gail Lewis (41 minutes)
1. I’m Ready
2. Big Black Cadillac
3. Boppin’ The Blues
4. 88 Friends

7. Good Golly Miss Molly
8. Let’s Talk About Us
9. Jambalaya
10. Lovin’ Up A Storm
11. Shake Rattle And Roll
12. Let’s Have A Party

Next to play is The Killer, his band is playing 4 songs without him as usual , then he enters the stage to rousing applause. It's a rock' n roll audience so as soon as he gets behind the piano there's an invasion down the front , security tried to push people back but that was too late. Cool .
Jerry seems to be physically in shape , better than last time in Paris at the Palais des Congres. He's not getting up anymore , well only once during his performance to talk to the sound engineer showing his fist right in front of his nose. He's not playing with his feet no more, but the attitude is intact , he middle finger the camera man who was getting to close, two screens were on the sides, People went nuts.
Nice show in an electric atmosphere . That's what i like !

11. Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On

Wanna fight motherfucker !!!

Chuck Berry is headlining , the security has secured the perimeter during the break , no one is allowed to stand up front of stage or stay in the aisles . Too bad .
No screens for his performance , in case anyone is recording and photographers are only allowed ONE SONG by the management ( "FUCK OFF" is Patrice Guino's answer to that )
Chuck is going very well physically ( he's 83 ) walking from one side of the stage to another , he's in fine spirit : smiling , laughing and talking to the audience but ...
Each time i'm going to one of his gigs , it's getting worse , maybe someone should tell him how to tune a guitar , his guitar playing is COMPLETELY wrong all along the concert .
It was APPALLING.
Yougsters in front of me kept on laughing every time he was hitting the wrong chord, they just couldn't believe it . An old fan had is head in his hands for most of the gig .
So embarrassing .
The only good moment was his version of " Maybellene " and thanfully it's on video here on this site .
He asked girls to come on stage for the last song ( see picture ).
Luckily we could met him very briefly after the show .
Patrice Guino, our photographer ,even had his album signed ( bastard ).
Chuck Berry & son

Franz Ferdinand + Yo Majesty + Get well soon Festival des Inrocks Paris Cigale Nov 13th 2008

Festival des Inrocks , Live @ La Cigale in Paris on Nov 13th 2008 with Franz Ferdinand , Yo Majesty and Get Well Soon.

Of course, the show was SOLD-OUT a long time ago almost as soon as Franz Ferdinand was announced.
First band to play is Get Well Soon, they've done a decent set , it's their first record and probably first time in Paris. They've listen to Radiohead's OK Computer too many times , just imagine an indie Radiohead without the electronic and with a trumpet player ( who was stunning ) and you have a guess to what Get Well Soon sound like. Promising for the future.
Then we had Yo Majesty , what the FUCK were they doing here ? Two black girls and a DJ escaped from south central or the Bronx rapping over some electronic shit.
The music is crap but they were enjoyable , they know how to work an audience.

Franz Ferdinand ended the Festival in style. Can we call this a festival with only 3 bands playing between 35 min and 60 min ?
I like them very much LIVE and we were not disappointed at all.
From start to finish they've rocked La Cigale. Many people tried to get on the stage and crowdsurfing to everyone's delight in a lively atmosphere, everyone was jumping up and down in the pit.( see video )
These guys are having fun and we're having fun too.
The set was very short ( 60 min with the encore , COME ON guys you can do longer than this !!! ) but they've pleased Paris by playing a greatest hits gig.
One of the best show i've seen for a few months.

SETLIST : ( TBC )
Bite Hard ( new song )
Do You Want To
Matinée
Kathryn, Kiss Me
Walk Away
40 Ft.
Turn it on
Take Me Out
Ulysses (new song )
What She Came For
Michael
--------
The Outsiders
This Fire
- they may have play another new song ? -

Nice view from the balcony

Goodbye Paris and Thank Yaaaaaa !!!

Sad news as Mitch Mitchell drummer in the Jimi Hendrix Experience was found dead this morning in a Portland hotel room.
He was the last surviving member of the band ( Noel Redding died a few years ago ).

THE FACES to reform with Rod Stewart & Ronnie Wood

Hi everybody
-THE FACES ARE BACK TOGETHER-

Very good news from London , my friend Ray Morrissey met Rod Stewart yesterday night at a party at the Claridge Hotel in London. And Rod told him that he was meeting up with Ronnie on monday for their first rehearsal just to check if they can remember the song .
Current Rod Stewart bass player will join as Ronnie Lane died a few years ago.

Here's the link to my friend's website : http://www.raysgigs.com/raynews.php
This news is so big that the NME took it from his site :http://www.nme.com/news/faces/41015

Hope they will tour in continental europe.

OASIS @ Bataclan Paris Nov 10th 2008

Oasis Live at the Bataclan in Paris ... at last .
Gig was supposed to take place on sept 30th and was posponed because of what happened to Noel Gallagher In Canada. Fuckin' Canadians.
Adam Green
and Gary Moore are also playing tonight in Paris and i really would have prefer to go to Gary Moore, but seeing Oasis in a theatre is something you can't miss as they're filling up stadiums in England.
They will be back in Paris in Bercy next year in March.

The marquee & setlist

I' m not a big fan , i've seen them a few times and i always though they were a bit average on cd and on stage.
Can't say anything on the poor guy who is opening tonight , one song was enough so we left for the bar.
The show is recorded for Canal+ TV ( to be broadcasted December the 11th at 10 :30 pm ) so there are a few cameras , strange enough the lightning is shit they've played most of the first part in the dark.
I didn't know that but the show was broadcasted live on France Inter radio.
http://www.radiofrance.fr/franceinter/ev/fiche.php?ev_id=529
Sorry no picture for this gig as , Patrice Guino , our photographer didn't bother.
Liam and Noel are very static so are the other members of the band and the bros are not really communicating with the audience as least we didn't hear Liam saying "fuck" at all, times they are a changing.
After Liam threw his tambourine in the audience it took 2-3 songs for someone to finally get it, ten people were fighting like mad to get it. That was funny to watch from the balcony.
The setlist is up there , as you can see they've played many old songs at the end.
They've played their usual show , nothing more nothing less, on autopilot.
Thankfully they ended the gig with " I' m the walrus " one of my favorite Beatles song.
Liam threw his microphone to a girl at the end.
Here's the video :

Show was OK.

CARBON / SILICON @ Fnac Ternes Paris Nov 8th 2008

Tony James , Mick Jones and the interviewer

Mick Jones ( ex- Clash ) and Tony James ( ex- Generation X ) are in Paris this afternoon at the Fnac store in Les Ternes to promote the first Carbon / Silicon album.
These guys keep on talking and talking ... about their new band and everything in general. Mick is quite funny , they answer some questions from the audience and then sign a few cds.
Very nice hour spent with those guys who used to be Punk rockers and who are now dressing like some bankers from the City .

Signing stuff

Greements de Fortune @ Fnac forum Nov 7th 2008

After a meeting in the heart of Paris , i went to the Fnac Forum store in Chatelet, a band was about to play in the store . didn't really pay attention as i've never heard about it. They started playing as i was looking for a couple of cds. What they were playing sounded really good so i went to see them.
Greements of Fortune , that's the band, is Funky and really grooving. As they were playing more and more people keep gathering around the stalls. I though they were really great, if Kool & the Gang could be half as good as this band it would be fantastic ( not the case as their last cd is complete crap ).
First I though they were English ( or american ) as the guys were speaking english between songs but then i felt that something was wrong ... in fact they're French.
Their songs are really good and they're tight. It was a surprise to discover such a great band when i wasn't expected it.
The guitar player is very good and knows how to play soft ( à la Nile rodgers ) or really heavy.
They've just played 5-6 songs for 30 min but they 've 'Funked' the place.
Check them here , they are great :
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=57585976
After listening to the songs on Myspace i'm a bit disappointed, live they are much more better than this ( listen to the last song to have a taste of what they are live ).
Very COOL !

The Yardbirds + Samuel James @ Radio France for FIP Paris Nov 6th 2008

The Yardbirds live @ Radio France for "FIP" with opening artist Samuel james Paris Nov 6th 2008

Samuel James

First on stage is american bluesman Samuel James , that's his first album released in France and his first ever show in Paris. He's on his own with his acoustic guitar , playing in front of a "vintage" mic for the vocals AND the guitar ( that's not plugged ).
He's young and he's playing the blues but not the english blues , the original acoustic blues à la Robert Johnson , Booker White or Son House , his influences.
Nice to hear some real vintage blues.

The Yarbirds Feat. French guitar player Jean-Michel Kadjan ( left )

Then we have The Yardbirds , formed in 1963 and still active , this band is famous for having 3 of the best guitar players ( Eric Clapton , Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page )in the 60's.
The only survivors from the original line-up are drummer Jim Mc Carthy and former bass player and now on guitar Chris Dreja. For this french tour they ask french guitar player Jean-Michel Kadjan to join'em. With 3 guitars they should rock.
Opening song " Train kept a rolling" set the record straight, they're here to rock ( and blues ). We're treated to a best of ... ( "Heartfull of soul" ,"Still i'm sad", "for your love" ... See complete setlist below )
The young guitar player is doing great as well as their harmonica player. They have an american on bass and vocals who's playing with them for many years now , his voice is a little bit low in the mix but it's hard to fight ( and win ) with 3 guitars. Chris Dreja is funny to me, like watching my dad rockin' on his fav tune.
Show ends with a great version of "Dazed & Confused " in its original form , remember that Led Zeppelin played its first gigs under the name The New Yardbirds.
The encore is " Im a man" . (i don't think they played "i wish you would" )
Great Night

The Yardbirds + Setlist & Invitation
The Yardbirds are playing the New Morning club in Paris on Nov 20th.
Samuel James is playing tomorrow on friday the 7th @ the Sunset club in the heart of Paris.

Tony Joe White @ Bataclan Paris Nov 4th 2008

Tony Joe white @ Bataclan Paris Nov 4th 2008.
Not that many people tonight , the balcony is closed and it's a seated event , so probably around 500 frenchies.
Support slot Jessica Lea Mayfield played a decent set with her acoustic guitar , she has a good voice but her songs are a bit average and are way too melancolic,

Tony Joe White is playing seated with his trade-mark black hat , sunglasses and harmonica around his neck. The lightning is... confidential.
Small band : a drummer and a keyboard player ( playing the bass part ) .
Tony has no setlist so his musicians have to be very carefull to what the 'master' is about to play.
His low-tuned voice is still doing it and his guitar playing has the 'touch' .
If you don't know his " swamp rock" maybe you'll think some songs are sounding a bit the same but it takes time to fully appreciate his writing skills. he's well-known for writing " Polk salad Annie" that was a huge hit for him and Elvis Presley who covered that song.
I don't know if i'm getting too old but it was quite loud down the front.
Nice evening

Eli "Paperboy " Reed @ L' Album de la semaine Canal+ Nov 3rd 2008

Second record for this young artist from Boston , here tonight at La Plaine St Denis for Canal+ tv show : L' album de la semaine .

Listening to Eli " Paperboy " Reed and his 6 musicians ( including two saxophones and a trumpet ) is like being into a time -machine stuck in the 60's while you were visiting the Stax studios or James Brown's hometown of Georgia, or maybe the pit in "Hitsville" USA.
It's full of soul music and the guy's white , young ...and from Boston.

He knows his classics : How to be introduced on stage by one of his musicians ( à la JB ), how to talk to his audience ( using the same 'old sentences )... let's not forget his stage moves .
He did his homework perfectly , maybe too much.
He's got the voice and the songs are good so i'll forgive him about the clichés he's using.
Well maybe not completely as long as he keeps wearing that horrible dark green suit.

Check him here:

sorry no pictures it's Verbotten.

Next shows :
Tony Joe white @ Bataclan Nov 4th
The Pigeon Detectives @ trabendo Nov 5th
Carbon/Silicon @ Fnac store Nov 8th
Oasis @ Bataclan Nov 10th ( Gary Moore and Adam Green are playing on the same night )

Tsonga vs Nalbandian Masters Bercy Final

Great gig ... sorry , Great match
French Tennis player Tsonga did very good during the first set, second set was more difficult : he lost it. Third set was easier but he scared the shit out of us , a couple of times while serving he was losing 00 -40 to win the game in the end.
Nice afternoon

one laughing / one crying

J.L Tsonga vs J. Blake Semi-finals Bercy Masters

Went to see the semi-finals in Bercy:
First match was Davydenko vs Nalbandian , very strange first set as if the russian refused to play at all , then suddenly he woke up ( enough illegal bet on this one ? )and did a good match but Nalbandian was stronger.

Second match was French JL Tsonga vs American James Blake , this game was much more powerful and Tsonga was great , Blake couldn't do anything today to defeat the french player who's the local here. great atmosphere too.

If you compare the level of both matches , Tsonga should win tomorrow
Good luck mate !
