Thomas Dutronc @ trabendo Sessions Paris Jan 30th 2009

Thomas Dutronc is the son of french singer Françoise Hardy and actor-singer Jacques Dutronc
He's a great acoustic gypsy-style guitar player, amazing how sometimes he looks like his father , the voice is even very similar.
His music is a mix of Gypsy jazz à la Stéphane Grapelli and french " variété" .
The show was mostly boring to me.
His first record is selling like hot cakes in France , but it's not my cup of tea.

U2 @ Stade de France July 2009

Strong rumours are suggesting that U2 wil play the Stade de France on July 10th ( or 11th ).
A show at the Nikaia stadium in Nice ( south of France ) is confirmed for July 15th.

Cocoon @ Trabendo sessions Paris Jan 29th 2009

Cocoon @ "Trabendo sessions" , private gig for french tv Virgin 17.
After playing a sold-out Olympia , not so long ago , french indie-pop-folk duet Cocoon ( singing in English , please ) is playing in front of a selected audience of 200 people .

They have a huge hit here : " on my way ", they've only done one record and tonight we have the Primeur of a couple of new songs.
First time i'm seeing them so it's nice to be in such an intimate place.
Lots of talking between songs , to tune the guitar and to relax as the singer is telling us that he's so nervous about the recording. But they're doing fine so this chap shouldn't panic.
The atmosphere is very relax and everything is going very smoothly.
The music is really cool lots of slow songs , their fastest his their hit single " on my way ".
Funny how they're working like an old couple ( which they are not, so he says ) , they're quite young, talking to each other, telling a few jokes and even embarrassing each other to our delight.
It seems that a few naked pictures of both of them are circulating in private circles !!!
Anyway that's none of our bizness , even tought the girl is soooo cute we'd like to see this.
They don't take it too seriously so they 're playing a Tokyo hotel cover ( see video ).

Check their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/listentococoon

setlist

Don't miss them on their next shows at Paris' Cigale on May 19th and 20th

Billy Powell Keyboardist for Lynyrd Skynyrd dead at 56

After the death of Stooges' Ron Ashton it's with great sadness that we've heard that Billy Powell , keyboard player in Lynyrd Skynyrd died of a suspected heart attack at his home in Prange Park , Florida.
Powell, who has a history of heart problems, called 911 emergency at about 12:55 am because he was having trouble breathing. When rescue crews arrived they tried to perform CPR but were unsuccessful in reviving the 56-year-old, reports the Associated Press.
He 's the fifth member of Lynyrd Skynyrd to die after Ronnie Van Zant , Steve Gaines , Allen Collins & Leon Wilkeson.

Kaiser Chiefs + Danananaykroyd @ Olympia Jan 27th 2009

Kaiser Chiefs and Dananananaykroyd @ Olympia Paris Jan 27th 2009

First band on stage in a SOLD-OUT Olympia is Dananananykroyd , they were already playing when i get into the venue. They sound a bit like Los campesinos with 2 singers, as you can see on the pictures they went down in the pit to sing and ask for " free hugs ".
Entertaining. - click on pictures for the full monthy -

Da-Nananana-ykroyd in the pit
and on stage
right in the nuts ... ergh sorry ! ...eye !!!

Then we have Kaiser Chiefs , they've always been very good live .
I'm a bit disappointed by the new cd, but sometimes you rediscover a record by having the songs played live. They opened the show with the first song from the new cd , good.
Then things started getting really hot 'til the last song.
The lightning is great and Ricky is , as usual , doing the show ; running from one side to the other,Jumping up and down ( see pictures ), having the audience sing every word . Even the people on the balcony are standing up and dancing. Ricky even had a girl on stage ( see video )
I'm glad they changed the venue to this theatre , the Zénith was too big for them , you fully appreciate Kaiser Chiefs in a club face to face.
This gig is probably not my favorite from the boys, i've seen them many times in clubs before, but everyone went home with a big smile on their face including me.
Bluesy / Greeny
Yellowy / ready
yeah YOuuuuuuuuu

Beeeezzzzzzzzz

Flying high ...again

Eagles of death Metal @ L ' album de la semaine Canal+ Jan 26th 2009

Original setlist incomplete

The Eagles of Death Metal are in Paris tonight to play famous tv show " L 'Album de la semaine "
They also have a gig @ Nouveau Casino ( sold out ) on tuesday 27th.

Kaiser Chiefs are playing on the same day at the Olympia.

i'm just back from The Eagles of death metal ( AKA Pigeons of Shit Metal ).
Decent show from the boys. The singer is really a character looking cool and funny... allright he's limited on the guitar but it's ok for the Classic rock they're playing. I though they would be much more heavy ( so i was disappointed ).
They took it all , well most of it from the Rolling Stones , on a couple of songs The Glimmer Twins could sue their asses for plagiarism.
They have borrow the drummer from the Queens of the Stone Age , this guy is a monster and the music is so cool & relax( compare to QOTSA ) that he gives the impression that he could do the ironing while playing drums .
They've played their set and came back on stage to play 2 songs another time ( including " wanna be in LA" ) and added 2 others at the end of their set.

Pete Doherty @ Taratata Feb 2nd 2009

Pete Doherty will be in Paris to promote his first solo record "Grace/Wastelands" on Feb 2nd @ french tv show Taratata ( other artists including Keane , friendly fire + others...). Sold out.

Reminder : Pete will be @ the Bataclan for 2 shows on March 9th and 10th ( the first one is already sold-out ) Adam Ficek 's Roses Kings Castles will be the opening band.
Adam Ficek will also play a free show @ the Gibert Joseph store on March 11th.

I've heard a few things about David Bowie recording a new album in Berlin , how can the NME relate such a stupid thing just because someone who calls himself David Bowie posted on Twitter : "Cheers from a snowy Berlin! Working on some new material!" ?
NME where's your credibily gone on this ???

Also have mixed emotions on news about The Faces reforming or not reforming , the management denied it but some news coming from London are telling me that it's on for 2009.

Keziah Jones @ Trabendo Paris Jan 22nd 2009 RATP "Destination Musique "

Keziah Jones ' private show @Trabendo for the RATP ( Parisian transportation ) Destination Musique.
Invit' only for VIPs and competition winners.
The Trabendo is a 500 capacity club, so it is now a real privilege to see him playing in such a small place as he's filling up the Olympia Theatre ( 2500 Capacity ) for several nights.
His last album was a success thanks to a very good promotion ( and his talent ) Keziah Jones played 4 secret shows in the Parisian Underground, where he was supposed to have been discovered many years ago, I was at 3 of them.
The press coverage was massive.

Invitation front side

He gave a catastrophic concert @ the Olympia in November , tonight he seems much more relax as usual he sometimes plays out of key, but that's allright .
He's in a good mood and he's talking with the audience. Interacting should I say .
He played a couple of songs on his own and has the audience sing.
Short set , just an hour including the encore with a very good version of his hit record " Rythm is love "
Nice gig but he could do better ( and certainly worse )

Invitation back side

Keziah Jones Blue-Funkin'
Here's a B-side:

There was an aftershow party afterwards for a 100 VIPs with champagne ans canopes, Keziah stayed there less than 2 minutes when he saw the crowd and made a quick exit , too bad.

The Faces are rolling for 2009

The Faces with Rod Stewart and Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood are planning shows for 2009.
LA's Hollywood Bowl is confirmed and a big announcement will be made soon for some London shows...
So stay tuned to Rockerparis for more info ...

Check my english friend's website for what's going on in London:
http://www.raysgigs.com/raynews.php

More News coming from the NME 's website :
1) They've wrote ( which doesn't mean they recorded it ) a new album in 3 days .
2) Flea will be their bass player ( replacing the late Ronnie Lane ).

Well , i hope they will spend more time writing new material , 3 days is a little bit short to write a whole new cd and i don't know if Flea ( From the Red Hot Chili Peppers ) is the right choice for The Faces ( what about Glenn Matlock ??? )

Bruce Springsteen news : a few European stadium shows have been confirmed in Finland and Sweden beginning of June. and talks for a show in Nice ( south of France ) in July .

AC / DC news : Boxoffice for the Marseilles' show on June 9th will open Jan 27th.

King's X @ New Morning Paris Jan 20th 2009

It's been a long time coming...
18 Years to finally see King's X playing an headlining show in Paris France.
Last time they played here was in Bercy in 1991 opening for AC / DC.
Unusual place to see a "heavy metal" band as we are in the famous jazz club New Morning.
Needless to say that the show was sold -out a long time ago
The french audience listened religiously from the first second they were on till the last one , 90 minutes later. You could feel that the band was very happy to be playing in France ...at last.
The sound is crystal clear and Doug has a fantastic bass sound.
Funny to watch the whole audience moving their heads to the beat of the drums, lots of press is also here tonight with many photographers to catch this historical moment.
Many people were left outside without ticket.
And they' ve missed something tonight. Their sophisticated progressive metal is perfect and they've just done a great show !
Thanks guys and don't wait 18 years to come back to Paris .

The Jim Jones Revue @ Album de la Semaine Canal+ Paris Jan 19th 2009

After leaving the Wampas ( review below ) and their dedicated fans we went straight to Canal+

New english rock ' n roll band The Jim Jones Revue is playing for the first time famous french tv show "L' Album de la semaine " .
They are greasy & sleazy and really rocking , i mean reaalllly rocking.
Dressed up like 50's rockers, they're playing a heavy rock very 50's orientated
The singer is also playing the lead guitar and is screaming like a maniac. They have a piano that keeps their heavy rock swinging ( The Killer would be proud ).
Very nice set with 2 covers as an encore Elvis' " A big hunk of love" and Little Richard 's " Good golly miss Molly" just in case you didn't noticed who their influences were.
sorry no pictures for this one it's forbidden

Those bastards from White Lies were supposed to play a Black Session tonight on C'est Lenoir but cancelled it at the 11th hour. The singer was sick. What a surprise when i looked at the NME website the day after, the band is playing a free gig @ the HMV store in London.
He made a quick recovery.

Les Wampas Virgin Megastore des Champs Elysées Paris 19 Jan 2009

The french punk rock band Les Wampas is playing live @ the Virgin Megastore on the famous Champs Elysées to promote their new cd " Les Wampas sont la preuve que dieu existe " , ( The Wampas are the living proof that god exists ) .
Not to be taken too seriously of course. That's why the record cover is what it is : an Ostrich .
It is packed , their fans are bit like a family so everyone knows eachother and quite unusual for a french punk rockers they attract many girls some of them very pretty ( even more unusual for a punk band ).
As always The Wampas are kicking ass live, their heavy rock is lively and makes you wanna jump.
Short set : half an hour but fool of energy.
The singer Didier Wampas is mad and went several times singing in the pit , crowdsurfing ...in a very nice atmosphere.

Here's a nice video from the event :

And here it is :

That's what i call Information !

AC / DC @ Velodrome Marseille June 9th 2009

AC DC has added a second show in France in June , they will be playing in Marseille' s football stadium The Velodrome on June 9th .
A few rumours were talking about 2 shows in Nice June 8th and Paris June 10th , these shows won't happened as Ac Dc never play 2 stadium shows in a row ( too bad for Paris ).

The Fleshtones + Tony Truand @ Mécanique Ondulatoire Paris Jan 16th 2009

Second show for opening band Tony Truand & The "Mighty" Fleshtones should i call them now.And ROCKERPARIS is here again, you 'll never get rid of us ...
It's really funny how impredictable that funny little french fellow can be , that guitar player is as tall as Malcom Young from AC DC and tries to play the tough guy, he's going into the audience to play some guitar and acting like a cunt pushing people and when someone is pushing him back , he wanna fight & leave the stage . Ridiculous. Hey dude ! get an attitude.

Tony Truand & Yarol Poupaud

Anyway , once again The Fleshtones , sorry .... The " Mighty " Fleshtones have turned the Mécanique Ondulatoire upside down & inside out.
They've done another GREAT show, the band has changed the setlist a bit and played a monster version of Grand Funk 's " Inside looking out " .
Another nice atmosphere with lots of sing along , once again it's chaos down the front, the singer's wild tonight he's going twice at the back of the tiny venue crowdsurfing ( see picture )
yesterday the band invited a young kid ( and his father ) to play some bass and guitar tonight we have two girls.
Tony Truand is called back to play a couple of tunes for the encore with The " Mighty " Fleshtones .
Another GREAT gig.

Band arriving & " What's next ? "

Couples are being made

" take me away "

Some female guests & another inaccurate setlist

This guy can play ANYTHING !

Once again all pictures are from our fellow photographer © Guino Patrice , he wants me to tell you that he HAD TO use the flash ( which is an heresy to him ) as the lightshow was the shittest he has even seen. as they say in French " Dont acte " .

Friday, January 16, 2009

The Fleshtones + Tony Truand @ Mécanique Ondulatoire Paris Jan 15th 2009

The Fleshtones are back in Paris for 2 shows ( tonight and tomorrow Jan 16th, both SOLD OUT ) @ La Mécanique Ondulatoire near Bastille in Paris.
Opening band is Tony Truand ( guitar player for The Wampas and ex- Dogs )

Show takes place downstairs in the cellar in front of 150 people ( sold out ) , thank God it's forbidden to smoke in there.

First on stage is Wampas ' guitar player Tony Truand & ses deux solutions featuring Yarol Poupaud ...on drums.
Decent set for this typicall french 80's sounding rock -punk band , they have funny lyrics ( " i took some speed to get less stoopid ... " ).
Tony Truand and bass player

Then we have The Fleshtones.
First time i was seeing them live , i have to admit i don't really know any of their music even though they started in new york more than 30 years ago. I considered them more of a punk band but in fact they're more a garage band with 60's influences of surf music and Rhythm & blues.

Singer , keyboard player , drummer . What else ?

They have to go through the audience to get to the stage ( if you can call this a stage ) so they started the gig in the crowd. It's chaos down the front people are getting crazy.
A few girls in the audience and a young kid ( he will end up playing bass with the band , see picture ).
The singer's a real showman and he's also playing his farfiza organ.
Lots of communion and communication with devoted fans , some kick ass rock 'n Roll and you have a killer concert.
Tony Truand came back on stage to play a few songs with them to rousing applauses .
Many songs were added to the setlist so it's not accurate.
The Fleshtones were stunning !!!
90 min of pure Rock ' n Roll

Nice haircut man !

Marie - Flore , Mina Tindle , Gaspard Royant , Mélanie Pain @ Fleche d' Or Paris Jan 13th 2009

" Live French & Folk " that's the name of this evening's concerts with 4 french artists @ La Fleche d' Or in Paris.
As you can guess they're French and they're playing Folk Rock, in English please .
All bands are playing 5-6 songs for 30 min .

First artist on stage is Gaspard Royant , very good acoustic set from this french singer singing in perfect english , so many frenchies are so ridiculous singing in english, not tonight.
Gaspard is playing with a drummer and a piano player to nice affect.
Check his myspace for more : http://www.myspace.com/gaspardroyant
Here's a video from the show : http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=B9-ZbiH3AC0&feature=channel_page
Gaspard Royant

Then we have the lovely Marie - Flore, i came tonight specially for her . I first saw her when she opened for Mark Lanegan & Isobell Campbell last month.
Alone with her guitar and some home made loops , she looks frail and shy but her soft voice and guitar playing is full of feelings. She reminds me of early Cat Power.
Sooo good , check my past review with pictures here: http://rockerparis.blogspot.com/2008/12/isobel-campbell-mark-lanegan-trabendo.html
Check her myspace ( with my video from the Trabendo ) here:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=89076180
Couldn't take any pictures as she played most of her set in the dark but here's a video :

Next to play is Mina Tindle with her Pop Folk rock, Jp Nataf is on banjo , another french girl who has listen too many times to Cat Power ( there's a piano too ) but it's better than listening to bon jovi, don't you think so ?
Another nice set in a very good english.
Check her myspace : http://www.myspace.com/minatindle
And video from the show :
http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=CxYm5QwUtng&feature=channel_page
Mina Tindle

Last singer tonight is Melanie Pain ( another girl we're lucky tonight ) she used to sing with Nouvelle Vague.
Can't say that she's singing Folk rock. Her music is more Pop. Singing in english & french.
She has a soft voice, sounding a bit like Emilie Simon.
Instead of using samples she's using a home made vinyl with her music that she 's playing on a old player. that's a very good idea honey...
Check her myspace : http://www.myspace.com/melaniepain
Video from the show :
http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=PaDqEdfnsUA&feature=channel

Melanie Pain
I usually don't go out to see unknown bands or artists , i'm such a lazy sod , but i should do this more often. All bands were really good and they were FRENCH , such a nice surprise.

My book signed ( left ) HR Giger signing a guitar

Famous painter H R GIGER is in Paris today @ goth bar Black Dog to sign stuff, lots of merchendising to sell ( Litho , books , Posters ... )
Signing session started at 6 PM but people were already queueing at 3 PM.
So you can guess it was crowdy , but everything went very smoothly even though this bar is quiet small.
As you can see on one of the pictures , some people get their limited edition GIGER design guitar signed.

Led Zeppelin will NOT tour or record " They're Over "

Just a couple of days after telling that Led Zeppelin will record and tour with a new singer.
Peter Mensch has told the press that THEY WILL NOT RECORD OR TOUR no matter who' s the singer, Plant or not
Even though he admitted that they tried a few singers , this dumbfuck of Peter Mensch added that "Led Zeppelin are over" for good . There are no plans for them to continue. "The whole thing is completely over now".

How can this fucker say such different things in just a couple of days ?
Does Jimmy really needs a manager like this ?

Anyway it's very quiet in Paris , Ayo did 3 shows at the Olympia , didn't bother going , James Hunter played the Café de la danse yesterday night , i couldn't go .

Next shows will be The Christians on saturday ( Alhambra ) , COCOON Jan 12th @ Olympia ,
Marie - Flore @ Fleche d' Or Jan 13th. Fleshtones Jan 15th @ Mecanique Ondulatoire. Lloyd Cole Jan 16th @ Européen.

Grateful Dead to tour in 2009

The surviving members of The Grateful Dead have announced that they will embark on their first tour in nearly five years this spring.

The quartet, which now calls itself simply The Dead, plans to hit the road beginning in mid-April and play approximately 20 shows across the US through mid-May.

The band reformed last October for a Barack Obama benefit concert in Pennsylvania, fueling rumours that they would get together for a proper tour.

The band, which now consists of original members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, will be joined by their 2004 tourmates Warren Haynes on guitar (replacing late guitarist Jerry Garcia) and Jeff Chimenti on keyboards.
