I ' m from Barcelona @ Bataclan Paris Oct 31st 2008

I'm from Barcelona @ Bataclan Paris
The doors opened late so the queue was streching very far in the boulevard , but once inside the balcony is closed which is not really a good sign.
I don't really know what they're doing apart from a song that was played very often on the radio, I' ve been told they were a more festive kind-a Arcade Fire.

That's true, they are 15-16 on stage: lots of singers , 2 keyboards , 2 guitars and 1 guy doing all the vocals ( here on the picture )
These swedishs are very entertaining and their Joie de vivre is very communicative, many people came with balloons and their show is a party with confettis and ... huge balloons.
Great gig even though a bit short : 80 minutes. Lots of beautiful girls in the audience.

Setlist and a picture of the Cirque d' Hiver on my way home.

Here's a video, far from being my best but the security was a pain in the ass :

Nadal vs Davydenko Bercy Masters Paris Oct 31st 2008

Went to Bercy this afternoon not for a rock concert but to see some tennis.
Nadal vs Davydenko , They just played one set before Nadal gave up, he hurt his leg.
Straight after this match , Federer officially gave up too because of a backache.
Needless to say that people in bercy were not happy at all. the director of the tournament wanted to say something he couldn't as Bercy was booing him so loud.

The Kills , The Virgins , James Morrison + others @ " One Shot Not " Oct 29th 2008

Complete Setlist

James Morrison + The Virgins + Anais + The Kills + Craig david + Randy Crawford & Joe Sample
Live @ " One Shot Not " for French TV Arte.
Complete setlist above with rehearsals sheet.
I've already been there a couple of times and this tv show is always great, around 400 people standing around a stage where bands are playing one after another. This is not technically a stage as bands are playing on the same floor as the audience.
I ' m sitting on an amplifier on the side so perfect view.
There's a 10-15 min break between each band so they can change the set up.

James Morrison is the first to play , he's allright but a bit too soft for me

The Virgins are next , the singer seems to be a funny bloke , they're allright too ...

Then we have French female singer Anais , she had a huge hit a couple of years ago with a novelty song but can she pass the second album ? The answer is yes , she looks more serious and she's singing in English, her new songs folk-rock songs are really good, maybe she should work her english a bit more but as she's only known over here it's not a problem . Will frenchies accept her in English ? Not sure about it.

The Kills were just GREAT , 3 songs and i'm more and more in love with VV. Too bad that i only saw the encore yesterday at the Bataclan.

Craig David has a lovely voice but the music he's playing is complete crap.

Last artist to great the show was jazz-soul black female singer Randy Crawford with Joe Sample on piano and legend drummer Steve Gadd. Hard to believe that i don't know this singer, her voice is fantastic and absolutely perfect when she's singing softly, which is the hardest thing to do.Second song " No regret" is a cover of Edith Piaf 's " non je ne regrette rien " and last song is " Street life" famous to young generations for being included in Tarantino' s Jackie Brown soundtrack.
Then Anais and James Morrison did a jam on a song i can't remember the name but it was a classic.
Great 3 hour and a half show. To be broadcasted next year.

Have a look at their website for previous shows :
http://www.arte.tv/fr/accueil/Echappees-culturelles/one-shot-note/1494366.html

Sorry no pictures for this event as it's forbidden and they're checking you as if you were getting into Israel .

The Kills @ Bataclan Paris Oct 28th 2008

We just arrived at the Bataclan for the encore, as usual it's hot as hell and people are smoking
We saw a good 15 min of it and the only thing that came to my mind afetr a couple of minutes is FUCK !!!
I Should have come here instead.

Live: the Kills are killing the Killers.

There are only two and they rock much more than the 4 guys ( + their 2 sessionmen ) of the Killers.
Anyway the night ended on a very good note as there was an aftershow party at the bar so we met both of 'em , these guys are just great and nice to anyone there.

I love The Kills !
NB : Jamie "Hotel" Hince told me that they were doing two TV shows tomorrow including one for Arte so i guess that they're doing " One shot not" , that's very nice as i've already planned to go there. Santogold ' Franz Ferdinand & Alena Diane are also on the bill.

The killers @ Nouveau casino Paris Oct 28th 2008

Difficult choice tonight : the Kills and the Killers are both playing in Paris on the same night.
We chose the Killers simply because we saw The Kills twice already this year.

The Killers are in Paris for a private gig at the Nouveau Casino to promote their new cd " day & age" . They did french tv show Taratata yesterday .
I've heard some funny review of their new cd , hope it's better than their second album that was very disappointing to me.

The best way to judge a band is on stage and the Killers are doing fine. Brandon is funny with one of his band always in the air, the bass player still doesn't smile at all...
They've played 5 new songs that seem to be quite good ( except for one with a disco beat ),
for a little bit more than an hour ( 15 songs ) and did a good show.
The audience was quiet , the nouveau casino was far from being full as there were lots of space including down the front.
Enjoyable evening but nothing to wake the dead and as we were out by 9:45 we rush to the nearby Bataclan to see the end of The Kills.

Sorry NO picture
for this event as Patrice didn't really bother taking any, we recorded a couple of videos but the sound is so bad ( we were in front of the bass player so there's too much bass on it ) that we honestly can't upload anything.

Kaiser Chiefs @ " L' Album de la Semaine " Paris Oct 27th 2008

After playing a couple of songs on Taratata on saturday and sightseeing at the Trocadero on sunday.
Kaiser Chiefs are starting this week by a gig in front of 120 people at " L' Album de la semaine " for Canal+.
As usual for this show bands are playing some songs from their new cd plus a couple of hits .
KC are always stunning on stage in front of a wild audience , when they're playing radio or tv shows it's different Ricky has to concentrate more on his vocals and is not fooling around as much as on a real stage.
Anyway this is a special treat as we are hearing the new songs for the first time live and they seem to be as good as the old ones , with some easy to remember melodies and sing-along choruses.
They did the first song twice as Ricky messed up the lyrics ( he wrote them on the setlist to get'em right , see below ) and they added " I predict a riot " at the end.
Very nice set.
Afterwards they went to Taratata to see The Killers ( they're playing a showcase tomorrow at the Nouveau Casino.

Led Zeppelin... without Robert Plant ( 2 )

A couple of weeks rumours that ZEP was ready to go on tour without Plant AND with unknown american singer Myles Kennedy was all over the news . I mentionned it :
http://rockerparis.blogspot.com/2008/10/led-zeppelin-to-tour-without-robert.html

A friend from England sent me this :
"Rumours that Led Zeppelin are threatning to go on tour without Robert Plant are increasing with Roberts refusal to get involved.Rehearsals with various singers in Putney now appear to include Aerosmiths Steven Tyler.Hard to believe that one but todays Sunday Mail say he spent a week in London with the band and struggled a bit. "

And here too :

Just hope all this, is a fuckin' JOKE .

Jean- Claude Vannier @ Cité de la Musique Paris Oct 26th 2008

Jean-Claude Vannier ( left )

Jean-Claude Vannier is the composer and the arranger behind masterpiece " Melody Nelson" for which Serge Gainsbourg wrote the story and the lyrics .

As part of a Serge Gainsbourg week-end the Cité de la Musique is playing movies and documentaries and is inviting Jean -Claude Vannier for a conference.
A journalist is asking him a few things about his work as a composer and arranger for different french artists and for soundtracks.

He's introduced as an introvert but he's funny and chatty, it's a very good way to know him better and his work but " Melody Nelson" is not really mention here ( it's only two months of his life and he worked with Serge for only a couple of years ) .

We met him afterwards even though a bitch from the Cité de la musique tried to kick us out.
The guy is really nice and the funny thing is that he watched my video feat. Brian Molko on YouTube from the concert.
The show took a long time to prepare and a LOT of money but no one made any cash on it and the artists did it for free.
The weirdest thing he told me was that Big Jim Sullivan who played hundreds of sessions in the 60's ( he was as well known as Jimmy Page on the circuit ) and who's playing on " Melody Nelson" played soli for the Rolling Stones ( it's highly possible as they've always used sessionmen on their records throughout their career ) and THE BEATLES at the beginning .
Big Jim Sullivan playing guitars on Beatles records without anyone noticing it for 40 years, I just CAN'T BELIEVE IT !!!
So Jean-Claude if you're reading this , tell me where you get that from ?

Kaiser Chiefs , Franz Ferdinand , Keziah Jones... @ TARATATA Oct 25th 2008

French tv show TARATATA @ Plaine St Denis just outside Paris with many good bands tonight :
1st recording : Keziah Jones, Franz Ferdinand , Katerine , Sporto Kantes , Miliana
2nd recording : Kaiser Chiefs , Amadou & Mariam , Grace , Alister .

Katerine + Franz ferdinand ( left ) Setlist but not in the right order.

Taratata is a french Jools Holland, there is only one set , a band is playing a song or two and while technicians are changing the set up there are interviews.
First on is Keziah Jones playing his new single and then he's playing a couple of minutes of a few songs on his own ( see setlist above ).
I talk to the bass player and he told me that they were going on tour straight after this tv show, the bus is park outside. Hugghhh !!!
Then Franz Ferdinand with " Hulysees", Katerine is doing a duet with them on Blondie's "Call me", Katerine's english is crap but he's a funny bloke so that's ok; The interview with them is also very funny.
French band Sporto kantes are playing their hit song then we have unsigned band Miliana.

There is a 5 min break and they are recording the second show.
Went backstage to meet my friends , Franz Ferdinand & Kaiser Chiefs dressing rooms are next to each other. We don't see FF but the guys from KC are fooling around and playing football, these guys are really nice and you can see that they are really enjoying themselves, and they FUCKING ROCK .

Saw the second recording with the technicians and a few VIPs , big mistake , we are far from the stage with cameras in front of us and the sound is low and shitty. the best seats are with the audience in the stalls.
Kaiser Chiefs are really good with their single but the second song , a cover of MGMT is crap. Grace is a gorgeous woman but her music is really average nevertheless she did a good version of Stevie Wonder's " I wish " with Amadou & Mariam. There is also a stunning black girl doing backing vocals with her.
Last artist to perform is french singer Alister with his latest single ( a good pop rock song ) he then plays a very good cover of " A whiter shade of Pale" on piano with a clarinet (? ) player.

Back to the backstage area for a drink ( or two ) it's past midnight and it's time to go home.
Once again , very nice evening.

More TV shows ( and proper gigs )are coming this week :
Oct 26th Bashung @ Elysée Montmartre .
Oct 27th Kaiser Chiefs @ Album de la semaine
Oct 27th The Killers , Vampire Weekend + others @ Taratata
Oct 28th The Kills @ Bataclan , the Killers @ Nouveau Casino ( Private show ), Beck , Katie Melua + others @ One shot not tv show; The Virgins, Snow Patrol , James Morrison + others @ Taratata .
Oct 29th : Franz Ferdinand , Santogold , Alena Diane + others @ One Shot Not ; Razorlight , James Hunter + others @ Taratata.
Busy week see ya there ...

" les indépendants montent le son " Free concert Palais Royal Paris Oct 24th 2008

To celebrate the end of "les Arènes européennes de l’indépendance" ( i won't translate i don't know what it is ), the French Ministry for Culture ( Ministère de la Culture ) is organizing a free concert in the gardens of Palais Royal in the heart of Paris.
Tickets were to be collected this morning. there's around 1000 people here.
Each band is playing 3 or 4 songs.

The Courtyard with the "Big Balls" statue ( left ) French band Grégoire ( right )
Grégoire did a very decent job opening the free gigs at 7:30pm on the second stage in the gardens - Jardin du Palais Royal-.
Bloc Party
Bloc Party :1st band on the main stage in the main courtyard - Cour d' Honneur- , they look a bit tired , too much promo for their new cd ? they were ok
Keziah Jones
Very good set ( 4 songs ) then they rush to play Star Academy ( french Pop Idol ) tomorrow they are recording french tv show Taratata
Amadou & mariam ( left ) Time tables ( right )
I didn't really saw them as i was hanging backstage with a couple of friends, just the last song , people like them over here , they are from Bamako.
Time tables for make-up ( left )
The office of the Minister for the Culture Christine Albanel all set up for a performance

Christophe praying the Lord( left )
Wristbands :Red = all access . Black = cocktail upstairs. Yellow =aftershow party upstairs
I HAD THEM ALL !!!

Christophe did a decent set but refused to play his big hits and stick to the new songs, everything was recorded for a tv show to be broadcast next month on France 2
We missed Vincent delerm as we were having a few drinks upstairs in the main lounge, but i don't give a shit of him at all.
Travis
Travis ended the concert ( only 3 songs ) with a couple of new songs .
Then the audience is asked to leave the gardens and we made our way upstairs for the AfterShow in the office of the Minister for the culture and the lounge next door.
Camille performing IN the office of the Minister for the Culture

French singer Camille performed a couple of songs, we were a bit late so we could not get in ( sold -out : 15 people in there ) but we saw her as they left the doors open.
AYO performing in a lounge nextdoor - salon Jérome-

Tv Crew set up the cameras then Ayo rehearsed a bit so we were asked to go on the balcony ( it's getting chilly now ) for 15 min then called back to take a seat ( for only 20 people )and she did ONE song ( WHAT THE FUCK ??? ) All this shit for just one song !!!

Then we went into the office of the Minister for an interview with 2 french shitty writer who are telling us that they are independant because they have signed to a small publisher, so they only have to deal with a couple of people, even tough this publisher is owned by a company as big as Universal and they enjoy the huge distribution and publicity because it's a huge company, but they are still "Indie"
I' ve never heard some much crap is such a short time . These people are in the twilight zone.
Napoléon ( left ) and Julius Caesar ( ? ) were among us tonight !!!
Correction : In fact it's not Napoleon but his little brother Jérome Bonaparte and
the lounge is called - Salon Jérome-

FANTASTIC NIGHT !!! Bands were playing one after another so we didn't wait at all ( well almost ) Nice cocktail upstairs but i missed most of it as i was rocking with the crowd.
Nice aftershow "gigs" upstairs , in a hour we just had 3 songs but you're not invited every week In the office of the Minister for the Culture. So we won't ask for our money back .

"Melody Nelson" by Serge Gainsbourg @ Cité de la Musique Paris Oct 23rd 2008

UPDATED OCT 25th WITH 2 NEW PICTURES with BRIAN MOLKO
UPDATED OCT 24th with new video featuring Daniel Darc !!!

Jean Claude Vannier conducting the whole orchestra

Special Night @ La Cité de la Musique as we're gonna hear , at last , Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg live in its entirety for the second time.

First time was at the Barbican Center in London on Oct 21st 2006.
In 1971 when the album was released it had no success at all .
This album is credited only to Serge Gainsbourg but it is as much the album of Jean Claude Vannier as he wrote all the music and did the arrangements. Some music were written even before Serge put a pen to paper.

The concert was divided in 3 parts :
1st : 9 songs are played with JC on piano and vocals or instrumentals with JC conducting the orchestra ( see setlist for details ). Instrumentals were top .

2nd : JC is playing his unreleased and now cult album " L' enfant assassin des mouches" for which Serge Gainsbourg wrote a few lines. Some parts were very good others average.

3rd : we had " Melody Nelson".

The whole cast

See complete setlist for details :
French actor Mathieu Amalric didn't sing as he had the spoken parts , his voice matched perfectly the original version same with Martine Topley Bird ( who's playing Melody ).
Brian Molko did the vocals for " Ballade de Melody ..." he sung it his own way ( with his high duck voice ) but did a very decent job on it ( see video )with a punchy version.
French singer Brigitte Fontaine was out of it for " Valse de Melody", sometimes out of key. a let down .
Daniel Darc was Perfect on " Ah Melody" , the best performance of the night for what is probably my favorite song on this album.
French singer Alain Chamfort, considering his voice, did well on " l' Hotel particulier".
Seaming To "sung" like Yoko Ono on "en melody" but the original version has screams and gasps like Yoko Ono would do so it was perfect.
French actress Clothilde Hesme probably had the longest part to " sing" and did well too on " Cargo Culte".
In fact the whole cast did very good apart from brigitte fontaine , they all stick to the original version excluding Brian Molko who sung his song in a different key ( much more higher ).
It's funny to see that 2 years ago he had short hair and was starting getting bald on the top and now he has thick long black hair !

Jacques Higelin @ Studio SFR Paris Oct 22nd 2008

Private showcase @ Studio SFR in Paris to promote a new book on french singer Jacques Higelin by photographer Laurence Leblanc , words by Clémentine Dérouville.

Jacques Higelin with Laurence Leblanc ( left ) and
Clémentine Déroudille ( right )

First there is an interview, well... hard to say it is an interview as Jacques is fooling around all the time, the girls could hardly say a word. Clémentine is laughing but Laurence is clearly pissed off by the situation .
Note: Clémentine is the grand-daughter of famous french photographer Robert Doisneau.
Then, there is the concert : Jacques is still in high spirit and is still fooling around a lot.
He's playing a few songs in between reading his texts including a very long, and unreleased , one ( 15 min ).
First time i was seeing him and he was fun.
It's not really my cup of tea when he's reading texts but when he's playing on guitar or on piano , he's very talented musically ( and lyrically ) .
Good evening but lousy cocktail after.

Lou Reed @ Virgin Megastore Champs Elysées paris Oct 21st 2008

Lou Reed has just released a book and he's here at the Virgin Megastore tonight to sign it , and only the book ... so they say !

A book of his lyrics has already been released a few years ago, how to make something new with something old. The french publisher needs some extra bucks.
This new book is crap , they did some effects on the text , like the one i was doing 20 years ago on my Amstrad computer , COMPLETE RUBBISH .
Lou is very late but is nice and takes time to speak to everyone, you could get your cd or vinyl sign too.

Tomorrow night Private party and concert for the launch of a new Jacques Higelin book at the Studio SFR near Madeleine in Paris.

Gainsbourg Exhibition @ Cité de la Musique & Lou Reed reading @ 104 Paris Oct 20th 2008

First we went to the Varnishing-day of the Gainsbourg Exhibition @ Cité de la Musique.
Lots of hangers-on as always, awfully crowdy it was hard to see anything,
We spotted Jane Birkin & daughter Charlotte surrounded by so many cameras and security that it was ridiculous, Poor girls they were so scared by all this mess that they made a quick exit by a side door.

Jane ( left ) Self-portrait ( right )
Lots of hand-written lyrics and memorabilia, so that's very cool unfortunately this exhibition is a little bit of a mess, with screens everywhere playing TV shows , movies and images with no explanations at all, the sound of these tv-sets is also coming from everywhere so after half an hour you have a headache.
Lots of very small pictures on the walls so you need a magnifying glass to see them.
When they did this were they on fucking drugs or what ?
Maybe the conditions were not at their best for this exhibition. I'll give it a second chance and maybe some of us were a bit angry after dealing with this vermine PR.
Can't believe the attitude of this bitches.
Nevertheless we had a nice time at the aftershow cocktail but we made a quick exit to the new hype place in Paris : Ze 104 ( a french modern " Factory" )

Sculpture of " L' Homme à la tète de chou" ( left )

Alternate picture for the cover of Melody Nelson ( right )

Lou Reed 's reading at the 104.
It started very late ( 9:20 instead of 8:30 PM ) so we didn't miss that much , glad we didn't see the whole thing as hearing someone reading texts even if it's Lou reed's , it's a bit boring.
The 400 capacity hall was sold-out and listened religiously.
Thanx he answered a few questions .

We went backstage to meet him , French superstar designer Philip Stark was there , french singer Christophe too. we all stayed there for 30 min , had a chat , he signed a few things too. Then everybody went to the aftershow cocktail , a 100 people were already there drinking Champagne. Lou Reed talk to a few, signed a couple of programs and left .
First time I was going to an event there, it's beautiful and huge.

Lou Reed backstage with French singer Christophe

That's it for tonight, many things to come next week including many TV Shows ( with Kaiser Chiefs , the Killers , Franz Ferdinand , Beck , Santogold... ) Private gig ( Jacques Higelin ) and so on ... So stay Tuned

Suzanne Vega @ Alhambra Paris Oct 19th 2008

Richie Havens ( left ) Suzanne on stage ( right )

Suzanne Vega is back in Paris , this time @ the tiny Alhambra.
Needless to say that the show is SOLD-OUT.
As we arrived around 5 PM we spotted Richie Havens going out of the venue ( he's playing here tomorrow ).
This club is brand new , first time i'm going there. around 600 capacity with a small balcony.
Suzanne played in Paris last year ( June 27th 2007 ) to promote her then new cd " Beauty & Beast", i've been listening to her whole catalogue these last few days and this album is really her best so far ...
i don't know if it is because it's sunday , show starts at 6:30 Pm
Still very good looking with her hat ( and without ... ) , this is one of the last show on the tour, no full band tonight just Gerry Leonard on guitars , loops , some kind'O Bass and weird noises.
I love her music and when you have the right songs you don't need 20 musicians to enhance them.
I remember a show at la Cigale a few years ago she came with only a bass player and when i saw that i thought "What the Fuck ?!? It's gonna be boring" No way it was one of the best gig i've been to that year .
With a guitar or just on vocals (with the help of Gerry) that's enough don't need no more as she has some very good songs , she picks up some of her best plus a few from the last cd ( did i tell you that it is very good ? )
See Setlist for details... NB : Song n° 12 was " Maggie May" & She added "world before Columbus" before "Anniversary" ( here on video ) & last song was " Cracking".
Very good songs, a few jokes, a smile and you've got yourself a GREAT gig !!! Isn't that simple ?
After the show, as she always does , she came to sign a few cds in the lobby.

Setlist ( incomplete ... ) + Promotionnal cd signed
"Anniversary":

Yesterday Sony Music France organized a "hunt" in Paris to promote the new AC/DC record " Black Ice" . Hostesses were giving you clues in different part of the capital , to find cds with in one of them a ticket to go and see AC/DC in the US for the first show of the world tour .
Didn't get ANYTHING .

A beautiful hostess in front of 1 of the 6 "Black Ice", here in Montmartre.

James Hunter @ New Morning Paris Oct 17th 2008

JVC Jazz festival in Paris with James Hunter @ the New Morning in Paris Oct 17th.

One of the last concert for this Jazz festival in Paris , haven't been to a lot of these as there were many other gigs this month.
But what a nice way to ( almost ) end this Fest with James Hunter.
It's not really Jazz even if you can hear this musical influence into his Soul/ R&B , even a bit of the very early rock in a time when it wasn't called Rock and was played mainly ( shoul i say ONLY ) by blacks .
If you close your eyes, this lad ( yes mate he's one of us ) sounds like a black man from the 50's-60's even tough he's as white as ... M Jackson well , a bit more !
Hard to believe that his music was made in the 21st century,
I don' t want to repeat myself so have a look at the review i wrote when he played Canal+ TV Show " L' album de la semaine" in September.
http://rockerparis.blogspot.com/2008/09/james-hunter-l-album-de-la-semaine.html

He is just FUCKIN' GREAT !!!
His new record " Hard way" is getting rave reviews everywhere and he fucking deserves it.

Just listen to a few songs for free on his website : http://www.jameshuntermusic.com/
And this chap is funny too ...

NOW , Watch our video below you won't be disappointed.

Setlist signed with Pass

Here's the title track of his new cd " Hard Way" :

Thanks to Yazid

see ya folks tomorrow afternoon for AC/DC 's "Black Ice" hunt down the streets of Paris.

Older sister E.J sing one on her own on guitar she speaks perfect French . Both have stunning voices, and are doing backing vocals in Jimmy ' s Band tonight .
It's a family affair as the drummer is their brother Jackie.

Jimmy' s second daughter E.J
Last time Jimmy Barnes played in Paris was 14 years ago so we're glad that he's back , he's a legend down under but not really here in France .
The Trabendo isn't sold out, where are all the Australian living in Paris ?
We watch a bit of the soundcheck so we know it's gonna be rock.
And yes... IT IS ROCK !
Many people on stage 5 musicians plus Jimmy's daughters on backing vocals and Jimmy on vocals.
We are treated to a Best of ... some Cold Chisel , Jimmy's first band and many songs from his solo career ( see setlist below ). So lots of rock tunes , the 80's were fatal for many rock bands so we also have some AOR songs and a couple of ballads. So a nice balance with heavy stuff and more relax songs . He's playing a duet with his daughter Elly-May .
Jimmy Barnes still have his voice intact , he would have been the perfect singer for AC DC .
On stage He's giving it all for more than 2 hours .
He mentioned several times a fan who is following them around Europe and who's been to every show and they rehearsed a couple of songs specially for him as he asked them to play different songs . How cool is that ?
Another great gig .
After the show Jimmy went straight to the merchendising to sign cds and take pictures with fans
Cool !

One beer please !

Julien Doré
He is a french singer winner of French Pop Idol and he's trying to get a credibility.

Christophe
He started in the mid-60's and is a bit of an icon over here in France.
Aftershow with Phoebe & Christophe

Full setlist signed by Christophe to our fellow photographer Patrice

Nice 2 hour recording in this lovely studio, each artist performed nice sets including Pop Idol winner Julien Doré, Christophe and Phoebe Kiilldeer were good too. Recording started late as they were late doing soundchecks , it seemed that Christophe was, in fact late and hard to work with but the most interesting parts were the interviews between songs, Phoebe seemed a little bit lost here , even though her french is perfect ( she's australian ). There was tension in the air at the beginning and with what Christophe and Julien said, it was like being in the Twilight zone.
After the show , we met the singers , they were nice and chatty to everybody.

I'll post videos of each artist after the broadcast on saturday so stay tuned ...

TRUST Paris Zénith 14 Oct 2008

French Rock band Trust is playing at the Zénith to promote their recent cd " 13 à table ".
It's a small zénith ( 3000 capacity) and it's far from being sold out , the pit is very small and very close to the stalls which is perfect as we have 2nd row seats so the view is perfect .
Opener "Marche ou creve" ( see video ) is quite good , it's gonna be a hot one tonight ! They followed with a couple of classics unfortunately the new mid -tempo songs are lame and they've played lots of it .
They also have a DJ on stage who is completely useless and outdated it's OK on a couple of songs but on most of it it's boring.
I felt like sleeping for a good part of the gig, the singer Bernie tried to make the audience ( mostly male in their 40s ) sing a couple of times with no great effects . His voice is powerfull but he only sing half of the lyrics when the song is getting a bit fast, shame ...
Even the classics couldn't wake me up at the end of the show including their N° 1 hit " Antisocial" .
I grew up with this band , they were so popular in France in the early 80's but now ...
One of the most boring show I have been to this year .

Video of the first song :

Joan Baez @ Palais des Congres Paris Oct 13th 2008

Joan Baez @ Paris Palais des Congres Oct 13th 2008

It' s SOLD OUT , good news, can't believe she's so popular after all these years and she has a new album to promote :" Day after Tomorrow" released last month .
Of course she's playing the old songs and some new ones ( "god is god" written by Steve Earl, " Rose of Sharon", " scarlet tide" )
This show wouldn't be complete without a political statement , oh ! by the way... she's supporting Obama ( what a surprise ! ) to rousing applause.
she sings with or without a guitar and with or without her band.
She plays a couple of french songs ( can't remember the name of the first one ) and recites one ( with the lyrics sheet ) " Le déserteur" which is a very famous poem in france ( by Boris Vian ) about a guy who doesn't want to go to the war and is writing a letter to the President to tell about his desertion.
Show ended with her classics
Very good show .

Here's the setlist , but i think she played more songs.

Here's a video of the last song played :

Herbie Hancock @ Salle Pleyel Oct 10th 2008

Herbie Hancock @ Salle Pleyel Oct 10th 2008
Second show in Paris this year for Herbie Hancock , last time was @ La Défense on June 29th
Here's the review :
http://rockerparis.blogspot.com/2008/06/pura-fe-herbie-hancock-la-dfense-jazz.html

The first time he ever played in Paris was in this very same place with Miles Davis when he was young so he's glad to come back here even tough he doesn't recognize it . Nobody would it's been completely redesigned .
He wants to celebrate peace with this concert as the wife of decapitated american journalist David Pearl is in the audience .
Tonight he's playing with a different band ( guitar , drums , bass , trumpet and harmonica ) from June so the show is different and more jazz.
After one hour he has only played 4 songs including a cover of Wayne Shorter ( "V" for Visitors ).
Not really my cup of tea for most of the show, it's hard to say that about Herbie but a couple of songs were quite annoying. He did one written by his guitar player called "17teens" because it has 17 beats . So it was a real challenge to play it ( so he says ).
He introduces his musicians many times and speaks easily between songs . Each one of them had soli including the guitar player that was complete crap.
Anyway... great Finale with Chameleon. for a performance of 180 min .
Could have been better ...

ELVIS 2008 The TCB Band @ Grand Rex Paris Oct 9th 2008

Elvis 2008 Feat; The TCB Band @ Paris Grand Rex Oct 9th 2008
Elvis' french fan club is doing a lot for his fans there is a shop in the heart of Paris near Place Notre Dame des Victoires and they are doing gigs with former Elvis' musicians.
Terry Mike Jeffrey ( Elvis ) & Jerry Scheff ( right )

Last year the gig took place at the Palais des Congres this time it's at the Beautiful theatre Le Grand Rex .
It's quite full but not Sold out maybe the tickets are a bit expensive ( up to 65 euros ). Anyone under 50 seems to have been banned for the venue , almost !
First we have french band Tony Marlow 's doing a few rock covers they are join later by french Elvis Ricky Norton . They did a decent job maybe they should work a bit their english but they are entertaining and it's always funny so see Frenchies rock.
There's a short intermission , a guy on stage is trying to sell us some shit : a cd of virtual duets with unknown singers and Elvis . In the Lobby there's a lot of merchendising to buy , everything you can dream of if you're an Elvis fan ( dvds, cds , books , tShirts ... )They should have done a special poster for this event , too bad !!!

Glen Hardin ( left ) James Burton ( right ) with singer

Then we have the proper concert with Terry Mike Jeffrey on vocals, impersonating Elvis 70's style ( the guy is perfectly fit maybe he should work his peanut butter belly LoL) , Glen Hardin on piano , Jerry Scheff on bass and James Burton on guitar. Ronnie Tutt is excused and Paul Leim is on drums. This is the TCB Band.
The Imperials ( the boys ) are here too on backing vocals so are the Sweet Inspirations ( the girls ); Let's not forget Joe Guercio and his orchestra .
In all there are more than 25 people on stage .

Jerry & Glen

Show started as usual with famous intro " Also Spacht Zarathustra " ( theme from 2001 : a space oddissey ) first song of course is " see see rider" . Jeeezzzz it's like being back into 1972 at the MSG in New York city . Incredible .
The band is on top form and the singer is perfect , his voice is great and he's not trying to imitate Elvis' stage moves at all . Singers doing it are so ridiculous.
The setlist ? well just have a look at the "MSG 72 " or the " Aloha from Hawaii 73". Halfway through the gig the Imperials are doing a song on their own ( a cappella ) then the Sweet Inspirations are doing a couple of Gospel songs ( including Happy days ) Elvis loved gospel music . Both vocal bands sing one together then back to rock' n roll .
We even have the " Elvis has left the building" at the end.
Just great !!!

METRONOMY @ Espace SFR Paris Oct 8th 2008

NB : Albert Hammond Jr @ Elysée Montmartre on Oct 9th CANCELLED

Metronomy Live @ Espace SFR , Paris Oct 8th 2008
Showcase for 300 people.

I've listened to what they were doing and i thought it was complete crap , a kind of early 80's electronic pop à la Bontempi .
A friend of mine ( mathilde ) wanted to see them , so i took her to this private party .
First the band hasn't played a note that this party sucked , no free drinks nothing to eat , tooo bad .
We didn't bother watching the opening band , french electro pop Minitel Rose as Mathilde told me they were bad . But nothing could have prepare me for the next 40 min
Those 3 guys playing their cheap keyboard , one had also a bass and one had a guitar, the third one played a bit of sax .
One of the biggest piece of crap i have ever heard ( with Bob Sinclar opening for Madonna ) at least Metronomy is funny to watch as they have this weird stage moves like those electro bands for the early 80's .
Sooooooooo BAAAAADDDDD. that it was enjoyable .( well sort of ... )

Joseph Arthur @ "L' Album de la Semaine" Canal+ Oct 7th 2008

I've discovered a true artist tonight .
I knew the name but i never payed attention before.

L' album de la semaine is a TV show where bands are playing live their new cd ( at least 6 songs ) in front of a selected audience of 120 people.
So perfect conditions to see a live gig, it's like they were playing in your living room .

Joseph Arthur is promoting his new cd " temporary people" , he was at La Cigale yesterday.
He's wellknown for being an american folk-rock songwriter but his new songs are really rock' n roll featuring a very sexy bassist ( she looks like a model ) and a very sexy blonde girl playing electric guitar. and believe me ! she knows how to play her LesPaul , she has a very greasy sound and knows how to handle a bottleneck .
Songs are catchy and really rock à la Black Crowes for some of them, the others are more laid back but never too slow .
Joseph is on the acoustic guitar ( beautifully painted ) for the whole show, his voice is very low he's a bit like Adam Green less 'fun' but more rock.

Setlist ( see photo ) + 3 other songs ( 1st one had " walking to the city to survive " in the chorus, 2nd had "show a little faith in me" and 3rd is "Cocaine feet" )

Great gig a great discovery for me .

Sorry no pictures for this one as it's forbidden. review by Patrice Guino ( for once ) LoL

Stephen Stills Olympia Paris Oct 5th 2008

Stephen Stills Live at the Olympia Paris , once again prices are really silly , up to 85 euros , he's playing in Belgium for only 40 euros ( What's wrong in France, why is it so expensive ? )
So the balcony is half empty ( the pit is full ) and it's an all seated concert.
His fans are getting old ...;-)
First part of the show was a solo acoustic concert with the band only for the first song and ... the last song. Stephen is a great guitar player but he sometimes tends to overplay , his voice isn't as good as it used to be especially when he's pushing it a bit. Some very good songs ( see video ) and others a bit boring.
So mixed emotions for this short acoustic part of only 45 min .
Setlist acoustic set ( tbc ) :Helplessly Hoping( with band ) ,Then solo: Treetop Flyer, Girl from the North Country , Change Partners, 4 + 20( video here ), The Blind Fiddler, Johnny's Garden, Daylight Again/Cost of Freedom, Suite Judy blues eyes ( band joined in for the second part ).

Second part was electric and much better , in fact , it was great .
With an electric guitar in hand he's the boss, reminding me of Neil Young's playing for some parts but only some parts. Nice electric version of Buffalo Springfield 's "Rock ' n Roll woman" with extended guitar solo. ( see video here : http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=vDfY_ystklM )
Encore was kicking ass with Christopher Stills on guitar for a great version of " Dark Star" later joined by his mother, french singer Véronique Samson for a smashing rendition of " love the one you're with" full of meaning considering what happened when Stephen was married with Véronique.
Here's a link to the video of "Love the one you're with" on someone else's Youtube channel :

Patti Smith @ Eglise de Saint Germain des Pres "Nuit Blanche" Paris Oct 4th 2008

Patti Smith and her two children ( Jesse & Jackson )played live all night long @ the church of St Germain des Pres over 5 sets ( yes 5 sets ) lasting between 40 and 50 min starting at 9:30 PM ( Oct 4th ) last one 4 AM ( Oct 5th ) . Guest was actor Micheal Pitt playing guitar.
She was supposed to read some poetry from St François d' assise but in fact it wasn't that at all.
It was a proper concert from Patti smith.
So don't believe all the shit you read in the press, even this morning, saying she improvised all night , not true at all she did it on a couple of songs no more .
David Lynch was there for the first show .

We had the free tickets for the first 2 shows ( 9:30 PM and 11PM ) which we had collected a day earlier then it was first come first serve for the 3 other shows .
Going there we just thought of going to the first one ( and maybe the second ) as she was supposed to read poetry , seeing what we saw for the first gig we came back for the second and after meeting a few friends there thinking the same as us , we stayed for the whole fuckin' night .
YEAH BABE a whole night with Patti Smith
And we've been to all FIVE shows !!!

Jackson Smith 's setlist ( right )

I'll post a proper setlist for all 5 shows later but she performed songs from her repertoire , she just changed a couple of songs from gigs to gigs .
The first 2 sets were 50 min long ( 9 songs ) , then the next two were 40 min long and the last one 45 min finishing around 4: 40 AM.
There wasn't a long break between sets ( 30-40 min ) just the time to have a quick drink a walk around the church to get back in line for the next one . I didn't see the night passing through .
Setlists including : Wing , Southern cross , Ghost dance, dancing barefoot, because the night, people have the power , helpless , Are you experienced plus a few others including a couple referring directly to the events in the lyrics .
SETLIST Set n° 1 : 2 songs ( one is "wing" ), "grateful" ," beneath the southern cross", "Ghost dance", "dancing barefoot", "Helpless", "Because the night", "People have the power" ( 9 songs 50 min )
SETLIST Set n° 2 : " ? " , "grateful", "kimberly", " beneath the southern cross", "dancing barefoot", "helpless", "because the night"," people have the power" ( 9 songs 50 min )
SET n° 3: " wing"," beneath ...","ghost dance" with guests Michael Pitt and ? , "dancing barefoot","because the night" , "people have the power" ( 40 min ) maybe 1 other song ?
SET N°4 : "beneath..."," song written for this event ?" ," river ?", "ghost dance", "are you experienced", "dancing barefoot" , "because the night", "people have the power" (40 min)
Set N° 5 : NOT in order: " impro + my blakean year","helpless", " a song about St Francis ?", "are you experienced" and " people have the power" ending the white night. + other songs 50 min set . Michael Pitt as a guest on guitar for a few tunes.
She messed up a few songs along the night but as we were expecting poetry noboby cared .
All Shows were sold out and many people were turned down , inside the church Preacher Patti was listened to religiously , people standing up only for the last song ( people have the power ) .
The american actor Michael Pitt guesting on guitars and contributing vocals for a few numbers on the last 3 sets .

With Micheal Pitt ( or is it Kurt Cobain ??? )

FANTASTIC " nuit blanche " ( "white night" or " sleepless night " ) with Patti Smith.

Can you believe the shit ? 5 SHOWS IN ONE NIGHT in one of the most wellknown church in the world in the heart of the Latin quarter on the left bank of Paris.
FUCKING BRILLIANT !!!

Martha High @ Jamel Comedy club Paris Oct 3rd 2008

Martha High & the Shaolin Temple Defenders live @ "Jamel Comedy club".

The STD without Martha + Setlist

Private event for the first show of her French October tour . This is a late show as the band went on stage at 11:30 pm .
When i get into this trendy club I just couldn't fuckin' believe my eyes , the place is so small , there's a stage in the back and a small room with tables and chairs , it's simple nice and cosy .
Couldn't believe that i missed the Stevie Wonder aftershow party here, yes mates he played here in front of a hundred people , felt like i wanted to hung myself as we knew about it and didn't go thinking he would never played . AAAAaaaggghhhh !!!

Anyway The Shaolin Temple Defenders started to do a few numbers before Martha High joined them . Nice start with " Think" .
I've seen Martha a few times and it 's allways very good , she's got the voice and the attitude.
Remember folks, she played with Mr james Brown for many years and later with Maceo Parker.
Well , you know what more can i say ? When it's good , it's good.
So don't miss her on her tour :
http://www.myspace.com/missmarthahigh
She was on stage for only an hour with one song as an encore but hey ! that was a free gig and it ended at 1 am , perfect for me as i needed a bit of sleep as i' waking up tomorrow morning very early for the Fashion Week .

Paul McCartney @ Stella McCartney Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2009 Paris Carreau du Temple Oct 2nd 2008

Before show with Ludivine (left ) and Sharleen
+ Peter Blake ( far right with the glasses)

Hi There
Just back from Stella McCartney 's Spring/Summer collection .
A couple of celebrities including french actresses Zoé felix , a heavily pregnant Ludivine Sagnier ( more beautiful than ever ) , 60's supermodel Twiggy , Meg Matthews (former wife of a Gallagher Bros from Oasis ),Zoé Kravitz ( daughter of Lenny and Lisa Bonet ) L'wren Scott ( Mick Jagger ' s girlfriend ) Sharleen Spiteri from Texas , former top model Stéphanie Seymour ,Sir Peter Blake ( he designed the cover of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper ) and of course .... Sir Paul McCartney with his son James
+ Paul girlfriend's Nancy Shevell who's keeping a low profile, funny she's not on the guestlist and not on the seating plan , so she probably watch the show from backstage.
We get there around 9:30 had a nice breakfast ( it's early in the morning ) with guests including Zoé and Ludivine . Then the show started , late as usual . Paul arrived with his two bodyguards ( plus french security ) just before the lights went out .
Fashion show was good , then we went backstage for a cup of champagne and canapés .
We met Sharleen ( as cool as usual and sexy ... ) , sir Peter Blake and Paul who stayed for more than an hour , he was nice to everyone and very chatty , playing with stella's kids ( he played a bit of harmonica for them )and so on ...
Patrice took a few pictures here they are :

After show : Paul with Stella and Peter Blake

Paul and a couple of blokes + Stella & Peter

Program signed by Peter and a gift ( left )

James Blunt Paris Bercy Oct 1st 2008

BREAKINGS NEWS : DIRTY PRETTY THINGS are no more , they have split up , the English tour will go ahead in October , nothing has been said about other shows in Europe including their concert in Paris in november @the Bataclan.

Ahhh !!! James Blunt, " Le bourreau des coeurs " for all the ladies ...

That's true : lots of girls in the audience tonight ( 70 % ) most of 'em in their twenties .
Quite surprising too , Bercy is full ( but not Sold-out ) for this all seated concert .

Teddy Thompson opened the show with a mixture of slow blues pop songs he has a good voice but it's a bit too slow for me .

James Blunt , the girls love him dearly , so many songs talking about love , well in fact all the songs are talking about love, and when you're singing about love you're not playing Heavy Metal.

So guest what ? a few mid- tempo songs ( at the beginning ) and then lots of slow songs ... way tooooooo slooowww for me . He's playing acoustic guitar, even tough it's hard to hear what he'splaying ( is it plugged ? ) and he's also on the piano .
Every time he's going to one side or another girls are going crazy but not too much, they know how to behave , this is not Tokyo Hotel ...

The high point of the show is when he's leaving the main stage and jumped into the pit to run throught the screaming girls to a second stage at the back of the venue to play a couple of songs on the piano and then run back to the main stage on his own and without security .
Good show but faster songs wouldn't do any harm ...
