TV on the Radio @ "L' Album de la semaine" Canal+ Sept 29th 2008

Next Shows :
Martha High will play the Jamel Comedy Club on Oct 3rd ( invit only, sorry )
Metronomy @ Colette Regine's on Oct 4th
Patti Smith @ Eglise St Germain on Oct 4th ( several shows all night long )
Razorlight @ Maroquinerie ( club show, Sold-out ) on Oct 6th
Metronomy @ Club SFR on Oct 9th
Just back from TV show L' album de la semaine . A band is playing live for 150 people .
Tv on the radio tonight to promote their 2nd cd .
Their music is quite strange and hard to describe but interesting as they sound like no one else . unfortunalety there are too much keyboards for me and not enough guitars so it's not really my cup of tea . Nevertheless when the guitars are out they're good but it's not very often. The bass player when he's playing bass (because he's also playing guitars and doing the lead vocals ) has a very heavy-groovy sound.
they were just OK to me .
Setlist ( see picture ) + "golden age" and "love dog" ( twice in that order at the end of the show )

I would like to thank all the Stevie Wonder fans who visited this page you're reading now and for watching all my videos on youtube ...

LED ZEPPELIN won't tour next year ...

A couple of days ago there were rumours of a Zep tour in the summer of 2009 , these rumours have been denied by Robert Plant
Here's what the NME is saying about it : http://www.nme.com/news

Robert Plant has denied rumours that Led Zeppelin are set to tour next year, releasing a statement stating that the he will not be touring or recording with the band.
In the statement the singer said that following his current tour with Alison Krauss he will not be touring with any band or project for at least two years.
Last week (September 26) it was claimed that Plant had agreed to a Led Zeppelin tour.
However, the singer's statement read: "It's both frustrating and ridiculous for this story to continue to rear its head when all the musicians that surround the story are keen to get on with their individual projects and move forward.

"I wish Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham nothing but success with any future projects."

Stevie Wonder @ Paris Bercy Sept 28th 2008

Stevie Wonder @ Paris Bercy Sept 28th 2008

Patrice Guino , our photographer took those from the Stalls so the quality is not as good as usual, Forgive him please ...

Concert SOLD-OUT ages ago even tough, once again , prices are silly : up to 150 Euros.
The show started very slowly with Stevie playing the first song on the Harmonica, then things started getting hot as he played one of his hit but unfortunately the first part of the gig was plagued by some crap easy-listening songs. One hit out of 3 of these songs. So the first hour was interesting when he was playing a well known song otherwise it was plain boring ( well i' m exagerating a bit too much ! )

Nevertheless the band is smoking , they are ten musicians ( 1 drummer , 2 percussionnists , 2 keyboard players , 2 guitarists , 1 bassist , 2 brass players and 4 Backing vocalists including 3 stunning ( physically) black girls.) and Stevie of course centre stage behind his keyboards...who is on top form vocally , it's hard to believe his voice is still as perfect as 40 years ago, loud & clear . Physically he gain lots of weight .

We had a couple of guests , First was a guitar player (Mao Otayeck ) who played and sang a tune. Second was French Harmonica player called Frederic Yonnet who did a great duet with Stevie on "Boogie On Reggae Woman" , a real "battle" of harmonica . I've seen many "battle "of guitars but it was the first one with harmonicas , couldn't decide who won , both were great. Aisha , Stevie 's daughter ( the little girl crying at the beginning of " you are the sunshine of my life , that's her ) sang one too.
Stevie cried at the end of a song remembering his mother , that was emotional . He also played a few seconds of Edith Piaf 's "Milord" .
The second part was fantastic as Stevie played one hit after another . We were all here to hear those lovely songs, he played a lot of 'em but not all of 'em : "I wish" , "As" , Living in the city" , Higher ground" , "You are the sunshine of my life" " superstition" , " my cherie amour" , "visions" , " Don't you worry about a thing" , "Part time lover" , "free" , "Isn't she lovely", "I just called to say i love you",plus a few others ...
The only thing i could reproach to Stevie is that he's stretching out some songs a bit too much ( one lasted 15 min ) .
Stevie's supporting Obama for the elections so he mentionned it a couple of times, he did a song for his mother too who " went to heaven " a couple of years ago .
We even had a couple of minutes of Edwin Starr's " War" with the audience participation on the chorus.
Glad to see him back in Paris after all these years for an overall very good 2h40 concert.
The second part was so good that it made us forget the weak parts of the beginning.
Setlist to follow shortly...
There was an aftershow party at the Jamel Comedy Club and Stevie Wonder has played there for half an hour ( courtesy of http://www.funkhome.com/ )

Elliott Murphy & Olivier Durand

M. Le Maire du 6e arrondissement introducing Elliott .

Elliott Murphy & the Normandy all star band is playing an unusual free gig in one of the reception room of the 6th district 's Paris Town Hall. The 6th district is on the famous left bank and the Town Hall just in front of the Saint Sulpice church which is famous now for being in the -DaVinci Code- and 2 min 's walk from the St Germain des Pres church. Lots of people ( around 500 ) so the reception room is full. Many fans and some posh guests from the Left Bank.
Elliott is living in Paris for many years now and he's playing quite often here .
Never been disappointed with this american songwritter his catalogue is excellent and his shows are always great .
Tonight is no exception, what can I say ? Another fucking great gig.
How is it possible that he's not selling out stadium ? It's the greatest mistery of rock !
Short set of "just " 90 min ( curfew at 10:30 pm ) usually he's on for 3 to 4 hours .

Check his myspace if you don't know him he deserves it :

Oasis & AC DC Breaking News...

Oasis new show for Paris is Nov 10th ( Septh 30th was postponed )
AC DC shows in Paris are Feb 25th and 27th in Bercy.

QUEEN + Paul Rodgers @ Paris Bercy Sept 24th 2008

The Whole Band
Great show by QUEEN + Paul Rodgers.

Bercy is very far from being full , there are black curtains in the back and on both sides to cover empty seats . The pit down the front is easy , lots of spaces even in the very first rows so perfect conditions down there , no pushing. Around 9000 people into this 17000 capacity arena.
I'm really not convinced by the new songs including when they are live. Starting the show with a new song is a complete mistake , first beacause not everybody knows it and second it's a "mid-tempo" song.
Roger's solo on drums ( plus the bass-drums thing ) is a little bit long and comes to early into the gig .
Nevertheless even with its weakness the show was nice , the stage's design and lightning is impressive especially the catwalk which is used very often and to great effect.
Lots of costumes changes for Paul & Brian ( see pictures ).
The band's security was a pain in the ass preventing people from taking pictures or recording. What for ?
Paul Rodgers ' voice is one of the greatest and fits perfectly with Queen's songs.
The setlist is great , so many fantastic songs ... and Paul's song were the best , how can you beat " Feel like making love" , "seagull" , " Bad company" or " all right now" ? Even Queen can't ...
Maybe this show needed so more Rocky and up-tempo songs.
Very good show indeed.

Divine Comedy @ Cité de la Musique Paris Sept 23rd 2008

UPDATED SEPT 24th WITH VIDEO...

Waaaooooohhhhhh !!!
Second show for Divine Comedy @ Cité de la Musique in Paris.

As i'm a lazy sod, just read the review from the first show and replace the sentence "Some of the french songs were clearly not rehearsed perfectly " with " This time the french songs were almost perfect " . LoL
He still messed up the lyrics to the Georges Brassens' song " les copains d' abord" but i think he did it on purpose for a laugh.
Yesterday's show was very good but tonight it's a "sans faute" .
Complete setlist below with " something for the weekend " added as a last encore otherwise same setlist with same guests : Vincent Delerm for 2 songs and Daphné for 2 songs including a somptuous " Initials BB feat sexy Boy "

AWRIGHT Neil with a show like this ( with the french songs ), you can tour the world.

Vincent Delerm came back for a few seconds during "Joe le taxi" playing the little girl ( Vanessa was 14 when she recorded the song ).

Patrice Guino did an effort to get even better pictures than yesterday, nice.

Here with Daphné

We met Neil after the show , he was very nice and chatty.

I asked him how he picked the songs here's a few things :

"les copains d'abord " ( Georges Brassens ) suggested by his french teacher because everyone knew it in france.
" je changerai d'avis" ( francoise Hardy ) He heard it at Café rouge @ Heathrow Airport and then used it as a walk on song for his concert .
" Joe le taxi" ( Vanessa Paradis ) it's a joke.
" L' amour est bleu" : he did a program for BBC2 and had to watch all eurovision song contests ( lucky you ;-)) and he liked the song.
"Amsterdam" ( Jacques Brel ) He had to do a song by this artist.
He wanted to do a cover of Edith Piaf but he realised it was to hard to sing so he gave up .

" Amsterdam " by Jacques Brel :

Divine Comedy @ Cité de la Musique Paris Sept 22nd 2008

2 special shows SOLD-OUT @ La Cité de la Musique in Paris France for Divine Comedy.
Yeah Baby , only in Paris as Neil will play some french tunes only for these gigs ( tonight and tomorrow ).
No need to tell you that we reaallly love Neil Hannon and his band.

He started with Jacques Brel 's "Amsterdam" ( in fact he's from Belgium ) on guitar and then we were treated to a -best of- of his carreer with some french songs thrown in .

Here they are " Poupée de cire " ( written by Gainsbourg and sung by France Gall , eurovision winner in 196? ), "Songs that we sing" ( written by Neil for Charlotte Gainsbourg's record , music by Air ) "Les playboys " by Jacques Dutronc ( he was a good friend of Gainsbourg ) ," Anita Petterson" by Vincent Delerm ( shitty french singer of the new Nouvelle Vague ) ,"home" by Jane Birkin ( she was Gainsbourg's wife , written for her by Neil ? ) "Les copains d' abord " by provocateur & chansonnier Georges Brassens . "L' amour est bleu" by Vicky Leandros ??? ( eurovision song contest for Luxembourg in 1967 ), " Initials BB " ( written by Serge Gainsbourg for Brigitte Bardot with portions of "sexy boy" by Air ) "Je changerai" by Francoise Hardy ( wife of Jacques dutronc ) & "Joe le taxi " by Vanessa Paradis ( wife of Johnny Depp ) .

Complete setlist of Divine Comedy's gig @ Cité de la Musique below.

As usual with Neil , he has the english sens of humour and that british touch of class, Divine Comedy songs are just great and even when he's messing up lyrics completely or even when he's forgetting the lyrics to his own songs ( and has to ask the girls in the front row ) he always takes it with a laugh .
Some of the french songs were clearly not rehearsed perfectly, but it was ok

A couple of guests were here tonight first was Vincent delerm for a duet on a DC song and then was Daphné who did a great duet on " Initials BB" this song is absolutely fantastic and is one of my favourite ever, this long version with portions of Air's "sexy boy" was the highlight of the concert.

"National express" closed the concert .
GREAT GIG i'm coming back for more tomorrow .

with Vincent delerm ( right)

Goodbye and see you tomorrow night !

His fantastic duet with Daphné on " Initials BB " here :

Bryan Adams @ Zénith Paris sept 22nd 2008

Hi
You just wonder how Patrice Guino and myself can do 2 gigs in one night, easy the Zénith is 2 min walk from La Cité de la Musique.
So after leaving Divine Comedy's gig we just walk to the zénith to see the end of Bryan Adams' set . Patrice knows a lot of people so we get in allright and could see the last 35 min just in time for "It' s only Love".

It's a ( very ) small zénith ( 3500 capacity ) and it's far from being full , the concert was originally at the Olympia and has been moved. Lots of empty seats in the back and lots of spaces in the pit so we could sneak in easily down the front to the 5th row.
Lots of young girls and very cool atmosphere in the audience ( they all know the lyrics to every songs ) and on stage. The band is having fun and it's communicative. Nice stage , lots of light, 2 big screens on the sides and in the back . As we came in very late we only had 6-7 songs and not the more rock of his catalogue. He hasn't done a decent record for the last 15 years playing some soft rock ( should i call it rock ? ) bullshit . Live it's ok even with the soft ones. Strange 2nd encore as he's coming back alone to play a couple of acoustic songs including his smash hit " all for love ".
Setlist Bryan Adams in Paris below
Good show, but we couldn't miss the Divine Comedy , could we ?

MADONNA @ Stade de France 2 Sept 21st 2008

UPDATED SEPT 22nd WITH VIDEO of " Bordeline"

DIVINE COMEDY
is playing the "Cité de la Musique" in Paris for 2 sold out shows on Sept 22nd and 23rd .

Madonna Live in Paris
Another bash of pictures, this time from the 2nd show @ Le Stade de France
Once again all pictures are from our main man Guino Patrice

It's really funny yesterday she said " Paris is the shit" which means Paris is good and nobody get it and thought she said "Paris is shit"; Tonight strange enough she didn't say it.

Apart from " on va tout niquer ce soir" but she already used it in Bercy on the last tour.
Well , when she's singing ( i mean really not tapes ) she's struggling with her voice and is sometimes flat.

Enjoy Mother Fuckers

security sheet from the first show.

MADONNA @ Stade de France Sept 20th 2008

MADONNA for her first show @ Stade de France

All pictures by PATRICE GUINO ( Thanks mate ) .

As you can see the stage set up is absolutely great ...
But the music is reaally crap ...

Most of the time she's miming over tapes for the vocals

I don't know if she even play the guitar for real...

Nevertheless the show is STUNNING !!!

It's something to see even if you think that her music sucks ...

The end

Enjoyable gig !

I won't mention Bob Sinclair opening , it was the biggest piece of shit i have ever heard.
This french DJ is supposed to be one of the best , Complete crap to me .

The Lemonheads + The Futureheads + Tahiti Boy @ La Maroquinerie Paris Sept 18th 2008

Breaking News :
UPDATED SUNDAY 20TH : THE BABYSHAMBLES -WON'T - be in Paris on monday ( for "le grand journal" ) as Adam is doing a DJset in england that day. A friend of mine contacted him today and he said there was nothing planned in france. Another bullshit coming from Claponline ( they're booking the audience for tv shows in france ) . It's not the first time these Bastards are lying like this. Last year the Babyshambles were supposed to play a tv show and they cancelled it 2 days before but in order to make sure the audience turn up for the show they fucking lie to everybody telling that they were still on, even when people were queuing to get into the recording studio "the babyshambles were still on". Bastards.

Razorlight will Play La Maroquinerie on Oct 6th , tickets on sale only at the venue.

Indie Rock Party @ La Maroquinerie with the return of Evan Dando and his Lemonheads, the english power punk of The Futureheads and French pop band Tahiti Boy & The Palm Tree family ( that's their full name ).
Tahiti Boy & ...
First on are The Tahiti Boys , very nice pop band 70's influenced ( a flute player à la Jethro tull ).
they've done a very good job indeed opening for a punk band.
Their pop was well received among the half empty club.
The Lemonheads might be back but it's far from being sold out .

The Futureheads

Then we had The Futureheads , they were in Paris a few months ago to play a Black Session , i wasn't convinced at the time .Tonight they really succeeded . Their power ( post ) punk is lively.
They are enjoying themselves and so we are. they've played many songs as they're very short ( 2 min max ).

Evan Dando ( Lemonheads )
Last was the headliner The Lemonheads , Evan dando the leader was the media darling 15 years ago and all the girls were crazy about him. I hardly recognised him when he came on stage i though it was a roadie: iron Maiden t-shirt , torn up jeans and dirty sneakers with holes . HuuGGHH !!!
He started playing and it was hard to believe : his guitar playing is approximative , he's struggling with his voice as soon as he starts pushing it a bit and he's always looking up at the ceiling. even stage disposition is quite strange : the bass player is in the far right , drummer as usual in the back and Evan his on the far left . The setlist is in the middle in front of the drums ( what for ? ).
He was most of the show in the dark ( ? ).
He played a few songs on his own but the poor chap is just a shadow of what he used to be.
So sad... people were leaving before the end.
It was like watching a rehearsal before the tour ...

KEZIAH JONES + Mina Agossi & Ji-Mob @ "Le pont des artistes " France Inter Sept 17th

The Interviews

"Le Pont des Artistes " on France Inter.
2 hour long radio show featuring : Keziah Jones - Mina Agossi - Ji-Mob
Needless to say that we came only to see Keziah Jones ( it's my 5th show for this artist this month ) but it's always interesting to discover other artists .

Check the other Keziah jones reviews ( and videos ) here :
http://rockerparis.blogspot.com/2008/09/keziah-jones-metro

http://rockerparis.blogspot.com/2008/09/keziah-jones-rene-miller-metro.html

Keziah started by playing " nigerian wood" then he was interviewed, then we had Mina Agossi who's a Jazz female singer. Her band consist of just a double bass and a drummer , she's doing the rest on vocals and she's quite impressive.
There are interviews between each number.
Last artist to come onstage was Ji-Mob ( a french soul/jazz/electro band ) with as a leader a flute player . The female black singer's georgous ( see picture ).

So, one song ( or two ) followed by a interview and so on for the next two hours .
Each band playing after one another. See full setlist below.

Mina Agossi did a fantastic version of Hendrix ' "third stone from the sun". Remember she has to do all the melodies with her voice Stunning !
Keziah ended the show with several songs but
1st ) he didn't play all the songs w
hat were planned on the setlist and his set was plagued by technicals problems
2nd ) he cut short a couple of songs .

Anyway good show even if there were too much talking between songs ( technicians had to set everything back for each band ).
Nice to see Keziah Jones in such good conditions .
This is the same studio as for the Black session.
Nice to discover 2 artists Mina Agossi ( She's playing the New Morning in october ) & Ji-Mob .

James Hunter @ " L' album de la semaine " Canal+ Paris Sept 16th 2008

Back to La plaine St Denis just outside Paris this week to see James Hunter performing for Canal+ tv show " L' album de la semaine" in front of 120 people.
I've been listening to his songs on his Myspace page ( link below , scroll down the page ) and i really like what he's doing .
I 'm quite excited to see him live , seeing a band on stage is always the ultimate test.
Some are failing ( like The Virgins ) and many others are successfull.
He has 5 musicians with him on organ , double bass , drums and two saxophones ( one tenor & one baritone ).
James is singing and playing the guitar .
His songs are different from one to another, some songs sound like 60's northen soul, others are more Jazz : à la Georgie fame and others are a bit Ska but there's always a common point : Quality.
Hard to believe he's an english whitey when you listen to the music , the chap could (should ? ) be black with his soulfull voice . Oh my god Garnett Mimms is still alive !!!
His music is totally american and the way that bloke speaks between songs is totally english so the mix of both is quite funny to hear
And he has a sens of humour.
Very good gig indeed.
It is so nice to hear something different than the usual 3 chords Rock' n Roll .

This the setlist : he re-did "Carina" ( after "Believe me Baby" ) and played an extra song " No smoke without fire " . So 10 songs for tonight.

Don't miss him He's playing Paris' Jazz Club the New Morning on October 17th

Sorry no pictures or video for this one ( it's verboten ).

MERCURY REV Black Session " C'est Lenoir " Paris Sept 15th 2008

MERCURY REV a playing a late night promotional radio show for France Inter.
It's a Black session : live gig in front of 250 people in a studio which looks live a small movie theatre with very confortable seats.
We arrived just in time at the radio( 10 pm ) but we missed a couple of minutes from the first song.
They are here to promote their, soon to be released ( sept 30th ), new album "Snow flake midnight " .
This show is broadcasted live for an hour so we have a little surprise for you here.
The music is a bit like Janes Addiction meets Pink Floyd .
Some songs are really psyche and others are really heavy.
I don't know if i'm getting old but it's quite loud .
No breaks between songs as they're playing them one after another . So if you are not familiar with them it's as if they were playing one song for 75 min.

The singer is leaving his lyrics to the max and is sometimes funny to watch with his leg in the air ( a bit like that chap from Jethro tull )he also has some funny grins on his face .
Nice show but you really have to be into it to fully appreciate .
We were lucky to get 3 songs after the broadcast was over ( 11 pm ).[ not on the setlist ]
Those 3 songs are : ( from http://defgav.com/rev/)
Tonight it shows
Tides of the moon
Senses on fire

They will be back in Paris on NOV 25th @ the Elysée Montmartre.

Promotional gig for french TV show "l 'album de la semaine " Canal+.
The Virgins are promoting their new cd ( released in June )with this gig in front of 120 people in live conditions.
They're from NYC and are an indie band playing a mix of New wave /r'n'b/soul ( that's what they say on their myspace page )
I saw them already a couple of years ago at the Olympia theatre in Paris for a private concert organised by designer Agnes B ( Patti Smith , Sonic Youth , Placebo and others were playing that night ).
The show was OK, nothing special , just another band ...
But they should pay more attention to the way they look , they're really dressed like shit with dodgy t-shirts, sneakers and torn up jeans .
Sorry no pictures or videos for this one ( verbotten )
They just play for 40 min , no encore ; good point so we rush to MERCURY REV which are playing at the other side of Paris for a Black session on "C'est Lenoir".

BREAKING NEWS : ROGER HODGSON will play The OLYMPIA in PARIS France on March 24th 2009
check Roger's site for more details : http://www.rogerhodgson.com/
or the Olympia 's site : http://www.olympiahall.com/

Roger Hodgson , the Voice of Supertramp , as it's been advertised.
One thing is for sure the voice is intact and crystal clear as 20 years ago.
Absolutely Brilliant show , the setlist speaks for itself , many Supertramp hits and a couple of solo songs thrown in ( they're great too ). 75 min show . Setlist below.
Roger wrote the best Supertramp songs , sad they're not playing together anymore as Supertramp was VERY popular in France.
Nice ending for the festival of " la fete de l' Humanité ", 50 000 people cheering and singing together on Supertramp songs.
Great
Afterwards we went backstage to meet him , there were lots of competition winners from the french site ( rogerhodgson.fr ) , most of them saw the gig from the wings of the stage.
Roger's a nice bloke he knows how to treat his fans .

Video " Don't leave me now " ( cut before the end sorry ! ) Here :
http://fr.youtube.com/user/rockingparis

Hi I've been asked if i can upload more videos from Roger on YouTube , the problem is that roger's songs are quite long so the file is too important to be uploaded on Youtube . Sorry .
I wish i could .

AYO played yesterday ( sunday 14th ) @ casino de Paris , i was too tired to go , last time i saw her at the Olympia ( she was recording her live dvd )it was very average , so i didn't mind ...

MERCURY REV is playing a Black Session tonight ( Monday 15th ).

BABYSHAMBLES @ Fete de l' Humanité Sept 13th 2008 Paris

UPDATED Sept 14th with new video " FUCK FOREVER" :
check my Youtube ( link below )
The show hasn't started yet that all the girls in the front rows are screaming their lungs out damaging our poor ears.
Lots of people in the VIP area to have a look at Pete Doherty's band : The Babyshambles .
They started smoothly and seem to be very relax tonight, maybe a bit too much. There's a kind of " nonchalance " or maybe is it the huge stage that gives me this feeling; The Babyshambles are fully appreciated in a hot & sweaty club ( or theatre ).
From the latest report i had it was complete chaos down the front ( i guess nothing could match what happened when the Stooges played here last year ) .
I'm a bit disappointed even though the show is good.
Maybe i was expecting something more 'rock ', don't get me wrong it was good but ...

Setlist: ( not sure if it's the right order so TBC... )
La Belle et la Bête
Carry On Up The Morning
Delivery
Beg Steal or Borrow
Baddies Boogie
Back From The Dead
UnbiloTitled
The Blinding
Killamangiro
Sedative
I Wish
Pipedown
Albion
Fuck Forever

No encore and we walked them to their dressing rooms , so that was really cool .
video is here :
http://fr.youtube.com/user/rockingparis
setlist to come shortly
Thanks to Patrice Guino for his beautiful live pictures and for getting us onstage to see the show ( with his friend Mathilde ).

BASHUNG @ Fete de l' Humanité Sept 13th 2008

First time i'm seeing this french singer live . he's popular in france and unlike many other french singer he has a credibility ( a bit like Gainsbourg ).
It's really crowdy , it's saturday, lots of youngsters ( for the Babyshambles ) and old geezers too ; Belgium singer ARNO played just before, but we arrived just in time ( 7 pm ) to see Bashung .
Nice bluesy pop rock set , the poor chap has lung cancer and is being treated so he's seating for most of the gig.
He may be a bit frail but the voice is perfect .
Nice show but i'm still wondering why he's inviting his wife to sing.

N*E*R*D @ Fete de l' Humanité Paris, Parc du Bourget Sept 12 th 2008

For METALLICA @ Taratata , please scroll down a bit ...

Baby-face in action ...
Hi there
Well... there was another Taratata recording tonight with Carla Bruni & Roger Hodgson ( former Supertramp ) but it wasn't worth going just to see 2 songs from Roger so i' ve been to see N*E*R*D @ La fete de l' Humanité.

It was a fucking nightmare to go there ( it's in Paris' suburb ), lots of traffic .
Luckily we arrived in front of the stage just as the band was being introduced .
Many people down there, around 50 000 .
I went straight to the VIP area, which is a little bit crap , on the right of stage but it was too late to sneak in down the front with the audience as it was packed, at least i had some space around me

Patrice Guino , our photographer , went into the pit ( enjoy his pictures !!! ) and with his contacts could managed to get ON stage , once again , for the rest of the show ( Bastard ! )
Needless to tell you that they've Rap-Rock the mother-fucking place. I really dig their music a very intelligent mix of rock & rap with bits of soul thrown in .
Their record " fly or die" is absolutly fantastic , i haven't heard the new one .

The 3 rappers ( or 4 ) walked that stage to death. Amazing how Pharrel Williams looks young, he really has a baby face. the show was very lively , for the last 2-3 songs they asked people to come on stage to rousing applauses. Then they get rid of all the boys and kept the girls for the last song which included a few seconds of the White Stripes' "7 nation army".
Some of the girls made it backstage , i don't know if they took'em back to their hotel as they were barely 17 .
Absolutely BRILLIANT .

As if you were ON stage with'em ...

More to come here shortly :

Can't wait to see THE BABYSHAMBLES tomorrow ( and Roger Hodgson as well ) @ "la fete de l' Huma... " . Babyshambles' drummer is playing a late night show with his own band @ Truskell in Paris after Babyshambles' set.

METALLICA @ TARATATA & Virgin Radio Paris Sept 10th 2008

James & Rob
Kirk & Lars

Long day with The Almighty METALLICA in Paris
First was Virgin radio in the afternoon and then TARATATA
It was a KILLER ...

Metallica was in Paris for a short promotional trip. they arrived here on the 9th around 9 PM. They stayed in the same hotel as Coldplay , Tony Parker & Eva Longoria. From what i heard they all went ( Metallica ) to the restaurant that night and then Lars & Kirk went to a dancing club coming back very late ... hum ... very early in the morning. Lars was staying in another hotel two minutes walk from the others.
On the 10th they went to the rehearsals for Taratata ( see picture below ).
Lars & Rob did an interview for Virgin Radio @ 6 pm ( Lars arriving late ) , we couldn't get into the studio so we had to stay in the lobby to listen to the interview.Around 30 fans were there and Lars & Kirk pose for pictures and sign autographs for everyone They left @ 7pm to go back to Taratata.

The show was running late and didn't start before 9 pm .
Metallica
was the first band to play and did their new single " The day that never comes" .
What you have to know is that Taratata is the french Jools Holland , stage is central and stalls are all around for 400 people. We were second row, 3 meters behind James, facing the others.
You can't imagine how close we were from James. Sound was neat and not to loud. Perfect.
Just as they finished their song there was a power failure backstage so it took a good 10 min before they did their interview. Lars asked if there were any Metallica fans in the audience checking Metallica t-shirts in the crowd and talking to fans. They were very relax and chatty even though they show little signs of boredom as they had their plane to catch just after the show. After the interview in which James had a laugh at dave Mustaine as Nagui ( the host ) played some Megadeth in the PA ( Lars prefer to stay out of it ), they went back to their dressing room. Several other bands followed : Gabriella Cilmi, Sahara Hotnights ( an all girl band ) with Sting's son Joe Sumner , Joseph D' Anvers.
Metallica came back to play 2 songs "Cyanide" & " Enter sandman ". That was it.
Only 3 songs but that was mind blowing.
We went straight to the backstage area , Rob said hello and signed a few cds to a few fans and then they all left ( we didn't see the others ) by a small door to avoid people to get their plane in ...Reims as Le Bourget was closed.
As you wake up this morning they should take their breakfast in Denmark.
GREAT EVENING !!!

Sorry no live pictures from Taratata as our photographer PATRICE GUINO left his camera in the clockroom of the dressing rooms and couldn't get it back in time .
He was shattered , poor boy ;-(((

Remember that The Melvins are playing the Elysée Montmartre on the 11th !

COLDPLAY + Albert Hammond Jr Paris Bercy Sept 9th 2008

NEW:
The Virgins will play " L'album de la semaine" Canal+ on Sept 15th
James Hunter same tv show on Sept 16th
http://www.myspace.com/jameshuntermusic
--For bookings call Bertrand on 01 55 93 40 48--
Metallica will do a interview live on Virgin radio today at 6pm ( they are recording Taratata tonight )
With its new record Coldplay is probably the biggest band of 2008, they've been N° 1 in more than 30 countries and they're playing in Paris for 2 Sold out nights @ Bercy ( 17 000 capacity ).
Albert Hammond Jr is opening , he's the guitar player of The Strokes .
The concert was very late as Albert hammond Jr started his set at 8:40 pm
He should go back with them as soon as he can as his gig was plain boring , his singing is monotonous and the songs are just average. I already saw him and it wasn't as boring as tonight.
What happened Albert ?

I'll upload a couple videos of Albert Hammond Jr tomorrow on Youtube ( link below ).

Then at 9:50 pm Coldplay came on stage , Live they 're much more exciting than on cd , they may only have 4 records but they have lots of hit songs. The singer is still funny to watch and the musicians could be easily replaced no one will noticed it. The stage is very simple with the cd cover as backdrop and then a big screen in the back . They've played a couple of songs on a small stage.
They've also played at the back of the venue and this time it wasn't on a proper stage but directly in the aisle in Bercy , first time i'm seeing this happen. Chris made an effort to speak an almost perfect french. Good point.
Funny how some songs are sounding like U2 , they even did like U2 when their drummer came up front to play some drums. Lots of confettis at the end ...
Enjoyable night.

Black Kids "C'est Lenoir" Black Session Paris Sept 8th 2008

I' m just back from the first Black Session on France Inter since the end of June.
Tonight it's the up and coming Black Kids from Florida.
Rolling Stone called them one of ten "Artists to Watch" in 2008.
Well let's see...
I listen to their music this afternoon and they sound a bit like the Brasilians' CSS , a pop dance band with a Robert Smith-like singer.
As always at the Black Sessions conditions are perfect , bands are playing live in a studio and the audience is sitting in stalls like in a movie theatre and the seats are very confortable.
Not the best way to headbang or dance but hey , i' m getting old ...
The Black kids are 5 ( drums , bass , singer-guitarist and 2 girls playing keyboards ) and are playing a mix of pop-rock-dance, which is normally not my cup of tea ( One of my worst concerts was The Rapture who are playing the same shit )
Well live they're ok but their songs are too similar to me. It's like CSS without the fun even though the 2 girls on keys add a little something.
Black Kids will be back in November for the Inrockuptibles Festival .
Check by yourself :

and here's a video from the Black session :

KEZIAH JONES Metro Auber Paris Sept 6th 2008

Metro Auber

Last show for Keziah Jones @ station Auber.
Complete success for this parisian tour of the tube stations .
4 shows ( Metro Miromesnil , Olympiades , Montparnasse and Auber ) each time many journalists , cameramen and photographers for maximum publicity .
The record company did a good job ( for once ) it was all over the news and open to general public which doesn't happen very often when an artist is doing a showcase to promote a new record . Well... it was a limited access , " for security reasons"; 15000 people registered and less than a 100 people were contacted to be revealed the secret location of each gig. But ,Hey everybody has a cellphone now .
Nice week for me as i've been to 3 out of 4 shows ( didn't go at the first one but he only played for 20 min ), plus a radio recording yesterday ( he played 4 songs plus interview )

This afternoon it's party @ Auber , Keziah is playing with his band ( one bass plus Drums ) and its the biggest of all 4 shows ( around 400 people ) and it's a ( almost ) center stage with people all around.
Instead of the acoustic gig it's a more Hendrix-like gig , the guitar is screaming with a couple of technical problems but anyway that's Rock'n Roll , it can't be perfect .
Very lively atmosphere with fans , small kids and family and people who just happened to be at the right place at the right moment.
He played 9 songs , 40 min .
the best of all 4 shows .

Here's a video :

The Rascals Fleche d' Or Paris Sept 5th 2008

Hi there
Free concert tonight @ Fleche d' Or in Paris.
With all the buzz around the Last Shadow Puppets, i could guarantee a packed house and so it was.
Many people here including lots of record companies employees . Everyone wants to see Miles Kane band .
Two openings bands before the main attraction , they were Ok .
The Rascals are a bit different from the LSP but the 60's remain in their music and they are more rock which suits me fine.
Even tough the band is quit young they're very tight , Miles is very cool on stage talking to people , drinking some red wine ( so english ! ) and basically just having fun .
The gig was short but intense
i can see a bright future for The Rascals , hope the cd will match their gigs .

Some of the songs played : Rascalize, Out of dreams , Bond girl , wicked ways (new song ), Fear invicted to the ... , freakbeat phantom ...
Here's one video :

For other videos :
http://fr.youtube.com/user/rockingparis
Including one new song they have never played before, well that's what he said ...

Keziah Jones "Beaubourg Center" Paris Sept 05 2008

Keziah Jones is very, very busy man this week with his 4 concerts in the parisian tube ( he's playing one tomorrow afternoon in a secret location ) plus the press and radios to promote his new cd .
This evening he's playing @ Beaubourg ( or Centre George Pompidou ) well , that's what 's been advertised , many people expected a real concert , in fact he's just playing 3 songs plus interview for radio France Culture .
After enduring an hour of political talks about the so called contracts for the next 20 years between Italy and Libya.
Keziah Jones is finally showing up his hat and his guitar for a ( very ) short set of 3 songs live on air sandwiched between interviews, plus one extra for the crowd his hit song " rythm is love ".
Enjoyable evening . even tough it was short.

Both sides ...

Video from his performance for France Culture :

More here :

Now i've got to rush to the Flèche d' Or to see The Rascals.

Bruce's bootleg from the Parc des Princes

A friend of mine just send me this :
this is the cover of Bruce Springsteen's bootleg @ Parc des Princes
they took Patrice Guino 's photos for their cover .
"Bastards" was his only answer .
But i know that deep down inside he's very proud. ;-)))
Just check his pictures from the very same gig on this site :
http://rockerparis.blogspot.com/2008/06/bruce-springsteen-e-street-band-paris.html

STRAY CATS Paris Zénith Sept 4th 2008

Stray Cats are playing the Zénith for their farewell tour ( so they say ) . Once again prices are silly , up to 65 euros . It's 80 % full up but it's a " small zénith " so there are around 3500 rockers tonight .
The evening started badly as i had trouble getting my tix so i've missed the first 2 songs as the band started at 9 pm sharp .
As always with rockers , they are trying to play the tough guys maybe to impress their ugly girlfriend, so don't push any of them or they would give you their meanest look.
On stage things are getting ok even if it seems that the band is playing in slow motion .
Where's their anger they're on auto-pilot.

Slim Jim Phantom is on the left with his traditionnal drum kit , Lee Rocker on the right and Brian Setzer dead center. They alternate their Hits with more obscure songs ( " sweet Gene Vincent" a cover of Ian Dury ). The audience is relax, maybe too much ( but not for long ) and on stage things are going smoothly, way too smoothly...
Should it be like this at a Stray Cats gig ?
What's missing on stage the audience will give it but not the right way ...
Unfortunately 75 min into the gig after playing the first encore ( already ? ) " I fought the law" some stupid fucker threw what appears to be a knife on stage ,Brian has warned people not to throw any shit on stage earlier, the whole band decided to leave the stage for good .
What a shame that their last show in Paris ended up like this.
They fought the law and the law won , tonight they fought Paris and Paris won

Here's the official statement on Brian setzer's website :

"A regrettable note from the road:
During last night's Stray Cats performance in Paris, France, what
appeared to be a switchblade knife was thrown onstage late in the show. Brian was struck in the hand by the object. Although he was quite shaken but not seriously injured by this act of complete stupidity, he tried to carry on and complete all of the songs that the Cats had intended to perform. This incident and the fear that the next item thrown may have seriously injured himself, Slim Jim Phantom or Lee Rocker made continuing the show impossible.

Because of the dangerous actions of 1 spectator, the sold-out crowd was robbed of a full program. 5999 people came out to have fun and celebrate the last Stray Cats show in Paris and 1 nutter tarnished what could have been an incredible memory for all who filled the Zenith. Thankfully, Brian's hand was only bruised and at last report, he will be fine. Had that blade taken another path, we may have been reporting a much different situation. Thankfully we are not."

Keziah Jones Metro Montparnasse- Bienvenue Sept 4th 2008

In a corridor metro Montparnasse-Bienvenue

Another show from Keziah Jones in the parisian tube , the third one this week , this time in Montparnasse .
I though he would change of style for every gig, that was advertised like this : one concert blues , one nusoul , one afrobeat and one funk .
In fact he's playing his trademark blue-funk each time on his own and acoustic .
So quite the same gig as yesterday , he played 9 songs for a good 30 min including his hit " rythm is love"; He ended the set with " Beautiful Emily ".
So good set but seen yesterday.

But this time , as opposed to yesterday where the gig took place in a hall for 200 or 300 people , he played in a fucking corridor , which means that if you were not in the firsts rows you couldn't see anything. Which is a real shame as it was packed and many people didn't see anything at all.
Of course our photographer ( Guino Patrice )managed to get , once more , down the front for you to enjoy his pictures and videos
Rock on Baby ...

Video " rythm is love "

For anyone interested The Stooges will play tonight around 9:30 pm at the Showcase.

KEZIAH JONES ( + Rene Miller ) Metro Olympiades Paris Sept 3rd 2008

Keziah Jones
Keziah Jones is back in the tube ( where he was discovered a few years ago ) for a second private show this week .
He already played on Sept 1st at the station Miromesnil for a mere 20 min. Very good marketing to promote his new cd as it was all over the news in France .
He will play two other gigs in the tube this week in other secret tube stations that will be revealed on the day to only a happy few.
For this second gig we have a very nice blues band opening RENE MILLER . They started around 3:00 pm as the station was getting more and more crowdy; They've played for a good forty min.

Rene Miller
Acoustic blues with a steel guitar and a very good harmonica player ( David Chalumeau ).
Videos here :

Check them here :

Very nice introduction To Keziah Jones .
Now it's packed . For each of his 4 concerts he will play a different style of music , for this one it's his trademark bluefunk .
A solo acoustic set of his new songs with a couple of oldies thrown in including his smash hit song and last one for this afternoon "Rythm is love" .
With his shiny smile , his incredible way of playing the guitar and his songs, of course, he just played to an already conquered audience .
Very good 30 min plus afternoon show .
Here is one song :

More here :
http://fr.youtube.com/user/rockingparis

Tomorrow , There will be a private listening party ( only open to journalists ) to have a taste of
THE NEW AC/DC
: " Black ice ".

Hope i'll be able to get there as it's gonna be busy tomorrow , The Fuckin' STOOGES are playing a private show in a club and The Stray Cats are playing the Zénith.
Hard to choose i'll try both ;-)))

Next KEZIAH JONES SECRET GIGS ON SEPT 4th and SEPT 6th ( all 3 PM ) in the tube.

If you wanna contact us , it's here :

Metallica will be in Paris on Sept 10th to play 3 songs at french tv show "Taratata" ( a french Jools Holland ). They should do another tv show " Le grand Journal " for Canal+ for a interview .
Speaking of Metallica the album has been sold by mistake in Paris' record shop Gibert Jeune in Saint Michel on Sept 2nd ( instead of Sept 12th ) . You should know about it if you're a Metallica fan , it's been all over the news . Only 50 copies have been sold.

Black Kids will do a private gig for french tv show " L' album de la semaine " on Canal+ on sept 9th

Ravi Shankar ( a lesson with ... ) Salle Pleyel Paris Sept 2nd 2008

Ravi Shankar is in Paris for what is supposed to be his last ever european shows. He's with his daughter Anoushka .
He played a "normal" concert @ la salle Pleyel yesterday which i couldn't go to .
But tonight is different , this is a Master Class with the Master of indian music in the very same theatre.
Of course, both shows are Sold Out because it's probably the last time ever that a french audience will have the pleasure to hear such a gifted musician.
For the people who don't know him , he's a sitar player from India , as a kid he was a dancer ( he first came in Paris in 1933 ) and then turn to the sitar .
He's wellknown in western countries for playing the Monterey & Woodstock festivals and for co-organising "the concert for Bangladesh" in 1971 with Beatles' George Harrison.
He's also the father of Norah Jones( yes , the one ).
I really did not know what to expect tonight. First he started talking about his life then about indian music ( what it is, where it comes from , how you play it , the different rhythms and so on ... ) I thought he would never stop . You can't imagine how complicated this music is .
After a good hour , we still haven't listen to a single note of music. He started introducing each instrument ( tabla , flute ... ) with a demonstration of each instrument by each musician ... at last.
The end was more interesting with a real song played while Ravi was leading on vocals.
