Peace One day fest. with Patti Smith, M, Ayo, Charlie Winston & Jude Law @ Zénith Paris Sept 17 2010 10:00 PM

-M- + Ayo , Patti Smith, Jude Law & Charlie Winston @ Peace One Day
Zénith Paris Sept 17 2010 10:00PM

Nina Hagen's concert ended very early so we went to the nearby Trabendo to catch the end of Interpol, unfortunately I didn't know the guys from security so they didn't let us in so we went to the nearby Zénith... to catch the end of the Peace One Day fest.

The guy on the guest list is cool and is giving us 4 tix ( he has dozens and dozens of tix that no one picked up).
The bill was really crap, some second rate artist ( to us :Youssou N'Dour, Yodelice, Vanessa Paradis) apart from Patti Smith, the kind of artist very popular in France.
The place is half empty (???), the Zénith is a 6500 capacity concert hall, there's probably 2000 people , black curtains in the back and seats in the pit.
We arrived just as -M- (aka Mathieu Chedid) is playing with Ayo , long jam, a bit boring and then Ayo is playing a new song to be out on her next album ( boring again).

We're very lucky Patti Smith is playing now, she's the one we came for.
Very good 4-5 songs set on acoustic ( Lenny Kay on guitar) with "Because the night", here on video, a couple of other songs including "Pissing in a river" (click for video) and " People have the power" (click for video)with -M- on guitar (see Pics).

Great set

"Because the night":

Bruce out of shot.

Jude Law ( for the ladies) is talking about this "Peace One day" organized by a Bob Geldof wannabe.

Charlie Winston is the headlining act, he's VERY popular in France thanks to a couple of hits singles.6-7 songs set
He and Jude Law are going into the pit to have a walk around the place to the ladies delight.
He's later joined on guitar by -M-, a choir of 20 teenage girls is also joining him for a few songs.

Last song is a song he wrote specially for this Peace One day ( simple melody and lousy lyrics).
Average music but enjoyable though.

Great to see Patti Smith even for just 4 songs.

The same festival took place last year with kasabian, Keziah Jones,Ayo, Charlie Winston, Olivia Ruiz & Lenny Kravitz @ Grand Rex ( click for Pics & videos)

Nina Hagen @ Cité de la Musique , Paris sept 17 2010 8:00PM

Nina Hagen @ Cité de la Musique
Paris Sept 17 2010 8:00PM
First time we were seeing Nina Hagen LIVE, Patrice already met her at a party years ago but we really didn't know what to expect as we didn't really follow her career.
First thing: she's looking really good & fit for 55, dressed in black leather pants & dress with a t-shirt I thought was AC/DC, in fact it's written Jesus -Highway to heaven-.
First song was a cover of Depeche Mode "Personnal Jesus" she will make many references to god all along the show, it seems that she has found god and is praying a lot which is very funny considering that she also made a few references to the Revolution and the "Commune of Paris" which is considered the basis for Communism.
It looks like you can be very religious and shouting " vive la revolution" or "vive la commune" at the same time.
Anyway we're here for the music.
She played many other covers, (second song was The Doors' "riders on the storm"), "Spirit in the sky", "Oh when the saints", "summertime", "My way" (rock version) and probably a few others (see setlist for details).
Here are a few songs from the show on video : "Schachmatt", "God's radar", "Das Veilchen", Elvis' "Help Me", " all you fascist bound to loose", "Soldattenmelodie" ( Thanks to Uschi rocks)
The show was rock with a couple of more electronic songs, she's always acting a bit funny and making funny faces as you can see on the pics.
The gig was also very blues orientated with a deep low voice singing à la Screaming Jay Hawkins.
Several parts were acoustic with Nina on guitar.Luckily her guitar player his taking care of things otherwise we'll still be waiting for her to tune the guitar right or play the right chord.
Most of the set was sung in English with a just a few songs in german.
it looks like the show was video-recorded maybe it will be available on the Cité de la Musique's website. Check it out.
Very enjoyable.

As the show started at 8:05 PM sharp it ended very early (10:00PM) so we could go to the nearby zénith to see the end of the "Peace one day" Fest with Patti Smith.

Interpol signing session @ Fnac Store Montparnasse, Paris sept 17 2010 2:30PM

Review, Pics, setlist from the show @ Trabendo @ Oliver's

Interpol
signing session @ Fnac Montparnasse
Paris Sept 17 2010 2:30PM

as you can see (far right) it's very relax

Very cool and relax atmosphere for Interpol @ Fnac Montparnasse this afternoon , before their SOLD OUT show at the trabendo club.
Not so many people, roughly a hundred, all queueing nicely and quietly to get an autograph.
30 min later it was done.

We won't go to the show tonight @ Trabendo but we may go to see Nina Hagen at the nearby Cité de la Musique.
We shall see...

Alvin & the 1015 @ Rhum Marin, Paris Sept 16 2010

Alvin & the 1015 @ Rhum Marin
Paris sept 16 2010

Relax atmosphere in this bar on Rue St Maur to see former male top model Alvin & the 10 15 ... in fact his name is Scott and he's from Chicago.
Deep low voice à la Tom Waits or Mark Lanegan.
We arrived just on time to see his second set ( yeah we missed the first part), Bluesy rock gig, we already saw him a few months ago @ Palais de Tokyo (click for review).
Cool set once again.

In other news:
  • We've been told that Axl Rose left the hotel in Paris at 7:30 PM to play a show in Geneva on the same night.
  • Ozzy is NOT really popular over here as he only sold 6000 tix out of 17000 for Bercy (sept 20 ) even though Korn is opening. His show in Oberhausen Germany (Sept 16 ) has been cancelled because he hurt his back. His doctors adviced him to take a few days rest. I won't be surprised if Paris' show is cancel blaming his poor health instead of poor tickets sales.
  • Peter Doherty & Carl Barat met each other in Paris @ Cafe Bergerac last week.

Vernissage of Jimi Hendrix exhibition @ Renoma, Paris Sept 15 2010

updated Sept 27 with videos

Opening of Jimi Hendrix exhibition @ Galerie Renoma
Paris sept 15 2010
Jimi hendrix died 40 years ago so lots of celebration this year.
Galerie Renoma ( rue de la pompe Paris 16) opened (click for video of vernissage) its new exhibition yesterday night ( last one was on The Rolling Stones).
Lots of wonderful vintage Pics on the wall, absolutely great most of'em very well-known, it is not really an art galerie but a clothes store ( pic above far left), the place is packed so we didn't stay too long, we'll be back when it's gonna be more quiet during the week.
