Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band Feat. Gary Rossington @ Paris Zénith June 5th 2009

Lynyrd Skynyrd well sort of...
@ Paris Zénith June 5th 2009

After seeing Neil Young yesterday at the very same place , what's left of a band called Lynyrd Skynyrd is playing in front a little bit more than 2000 people when Neil Young played in front of more than 6000 people.
Who wants to pay between 70 and 80 euros to see a cover band ?
The only original member is Gary Rossington ( the guitar player with the hat ) all the others are dead.
Lynyrd Skynyrd my ass ...

Rickie Medlock ( former Blackfoot ) is on guitar and Johnnie Van Zant, on vocals, is wearing his brother's shoes. Can't tell the name of the others.
What to expect ?

Old songs , old songs and ... old songs , like any other cover bands they're not here to play any new songs nobody gives a damn.
We're here to hear the hits and that's what they're gonna do.
From start to finish Hits , Hits and ...more hits.
Unbelievable how many great songs this band HAD.

SETLIST :
  1. Workin’ for MCA
  2. I Ain’t the One
  3. Saturday Night Special
  4. What’s Your Name
  5. Gimme Back My Bullets
  6. Simple Man
  7. That Smell
  8. Medley :
    • Whiskey Rock-A-Roller
    • Down South Jukin’
    • The Needle and the Spoon
    • Double Trouble
    • Tuesday’s Gone
  9. Gimme Three Steps
  10. Call Me the Breeze
  11. Sweet Home Alabama
  12. Free Bird
Not one song was played that was composed after 1977

They've played all these songs one after another no time for speeches, just 100 % music
The show ended with their anthem "Sweet home Alabama" ( the answer to Neil Young's " Southern man "), it's funny to hear them talking about Neil Young ( " The south doesn't need him around " ).
He was here on the same stage yesterday.
Just one encore and it's a terrific version of " freebird".

Great 90 min show , but how can they called themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd ?

Thanks to Patrice Guino for the pictures , he took'em with a small camera
you can see the difference with Neil Young's

Neil Young @ Paris Zénith
June 4th 2009

I was too late to see folk artist Laura Marling , too bad iI love what she's doing.

Needless to tell you that Neil Young 's show was hot.
Last year he played two gigs at the Grand Rex and they were fantastic , first part acoustic and second part electric.

This time it's an all electric performance with just a couple of acoustic songs thrown in ( "Heart of gold" , " Old man " , " comes a time" ).
A couple of new songs and ALL the hits " Cortez the killer" , " Like a hurricane" ...

GREAT SHOW
SETLIST :
Love And Only Love / Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Pocahontas / Spirit Road / Cortez The Killer / Cinnamon Girl / Mother Earth / Don't Let It Bring You Down / Goin' Back / Comes A Time / Heart Of Gold / Old Man / Mansion On The Hill / Get Behind The Wheel / Rockin' In The Free World // Like A Hurricane / A Day In The Life

In a sold-out Zénith.

Kasabian @ Football Tournament & Sony Store Paris June 3rd 2009

Kasabian Football Tournament @ Urban Football in Puteaux

Sony music France organised a Football Tournament with the lads just outside Paris in a nice complex.
I was there too late to see Kasabian playing but it almost turned into a complete disaster as the drummer hurt his ankle and had to see a doctor immediately.
Too bad the band is opening tomorrow for Oasis in front of 30 000 people but he should be OK.
Lots of journalists ( Les Inrocks , Rock & Folk ) and record company executives , the winning team was the one from a Football magazine " So Foot" .
Kasabian came back , minus the drummer, to shoot some penalty against the winning team... and lost.
The sponsor was offering a tv set and Marion , photographer for Rock& Folk, won the lot.
Lucky bitch ;-) the tv is probably worth a 1000 quid.
Marion won the lottery

En route to the countryside ?

Then we all left to the George V avenue to the Sony Store where Kasabian signed cds to a 100 fans and then we had an acoustic set in the basement.
The lads were really nice and chatty to everyone.
The atmosphere was really relax and things went smoothly thanks to the organisation.
Really cool to hear these songs in an acoustic form as I wasn't really convinced when they played the new songs a week ago @ L' Album de la semaine for Canal+
Setlist is below for an half an hour set.

Bat for Lashes + David Walters @ Bataclan Paris May 27th 2009

Bat for Lashes + David Walters & Caroline Weeks
@ Bataclan Paris May 27th 2009

Marquee & David Walters

The show started too early tonight so i couldn't see Caroline Weeks playing , i was just on time for David Walters.
The guy has skills , he's on his own playing guitar, percussion & lots of samples that he's actionning with his feet to nice effects, but I'm not really fan of his Electro-African-reggae style but he has talent.
The sold-out audience was reticent at the beginning but he won them over in the end.

Natasha Khan & Bat for Lashes have released a new cd with much more electronic than the first one and I really don't like all this electronic shit.
Caroline Weeks doesn't play with BfL anymore .
Now there's a drummer, a female guitar-bass piano player ( Charlotte ), a guy on the computer & Keyboard and Natasha on vocals & Keyboards ( guitar on one song ).
She still has her charming voice but the music is less interesting than it used to be, too much electro for my taste.
She's leaving the stage after just 50 min, Come on baby !
75 min in all that's a bit short.
One more thing that I don't understand is why all those bands are playing in an almost complete dark.
You're ON a stage , Why don't you switch on the lights for fuck's sake.

Great lake Swimmers + Amélie @ L' international Paris May 26th 2009

Great Lake Swimmers + Amélie @ L' international
Paris May 26th 2009

Amélie

After seeing Kasabian @ Canal+ we headed to the , now very trendy , L' International in Ménilmontant.
First time I was getting there. Nice place there is a bar and downstairs is the stage where bands are playing.
First is a funny blonde girl Amélie with a guitarist and drummer , she has a high voice and is acting funny. Nice set.
Then we have Great Lake Swimmers , I have never heard of that Canadian band before and it was a really interesting discovery.
There is a girl on keyboard and backing vocals , a drummer , a guitar and banjo player , a upright bass player and the singer-songwriter .
Typical canadian folkies with the shirt and beard ( except fot the girl of course ).
They made me think of a folk version of Grandaddy with nice harmony vocals and cool songs.

Blood red shoes on my way home

Kasabian @ L' Album de le semaine Canal+ May 26th 2009

Kasabian @ L' Album de la Semaine for Canal+
Paris May 26th 2009

After seeing the Plastic Heroes at the Gibert Joseph store in St Michel we headed north to the shitty Plaine St Denis to see Kasabian playing new songs in front of a selected audience of less then 200 for the Canal+ tv show "L' Album de la semaine".
First time i saw Kasabian I was very impressed it was at the Rock en Seine festival and I didn't know anything about them at all.
Today they're promoting their brand new cd ( they were yesterday at the Trabendo club ) so they're playing mostly new songs.
Usually bands playing live are much more better than on cd but I tonight I thought that Kasabian are much more powerful on cd than live.
There's something missing, maybe more guitars or more backing Vocals.
Even " Shoot the runner" was weak.
So it was good show but it could have been better.
I Guess it's a band you have to see in a festival when 30 000 people are singing along to their songs.
