John Butler Trio
@ Virgin Champs Elysées
Paris April 28th 2010 1:30PM
(+ Robert Francis @ 3:00PM)
Lunch break to see John Butler Trio playing a set at the Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysées in sunny Paris.
Lots of people, many of them teenage girls.
John has a fresh new haircut, gone is his long hair.
Always as cool and relax with his "new band" for this short 30 min set

It has always been a pleasure to see the John Butler trio on stage, a bit like going to see friends playing a gig.
Always nice and smiling, interacting with the audience.
After the gig there was a signing session, all band members were chatty & friendly with everybody, Before they went to the Zénith where they are playing tonight.

It was really over as Robert Francis is playing @ 3:00PM ( he is also opening for JBT tonight)

Foals @ L' Album de la Semaine Canal+, Paris April 27th 2010 + Anto Dust @ Pop'In

Foals @ L' Album de la Semaine Canal+
Paris April 27th 2010
English band from Oxford Foals is promoting its brand new album by playing famous Canal+ tv show in front of a selected audience of 200 people.
I've never heard them before but they have rave reviews in the english press I thought I might check them out.
Too bad for me, Hate that shit , the singer tries to be the new Robert Smith, they're dressed like shit and the music is very boring.
I hate all these fucking Dance-rock bands, what's the point of having two guitars to used them the way they do ' cling-cling' ?
Between early Cure and Vampire Weekend ( hate this band too) without the african beats.
Boring, Boring & Boring , a real torture they had to re-do 3 songs and they've played an extra one. They also did a song for the first time ever Live ( "Black Gold" ?).
Maybe I was the only one being bored , the others seemed to like it even though they're not convinced by the new record.
Then we went to the Pop'In to see Anto Dust for her second show in Paris (she's playing the Truskel tomorrow night).
We were just on time to see her play.
Very short set once again , less than 30 min
Basically she played the same set as @ Be There ( review below) a couple of days ago.
Beginning on acoustic guitar then only on vocals with Dan Pickard on guitar. Lots of talking and jokes maybe she feels a little bit unsecure being on a stage, she shouldn't , She has good songs ...and lovely tattoos

Eagle Seagull @ Black Session #314 for C'est Lenoir, Paris April 26th 2010

Eagle Seagull @ Black Session#314, C'est Lenoir.
Radio France, Paris April 26th 2010

After beeing told a couple of days ago that The Divine Comedy's Black session on May 3rd was cancelled for a stupid reason : They were expecting a full band but Neil wanted to play on his own on the piano. It is now turned into a White Session but without audience.
Too Bad I was really looking forward to see Divine Comedy .. sorry Neil Hannon.

Anyway tonight in the cozy studio of La Maison de la Radio , American band from Nebraska Eagle Seagull is playing to promote new album The Year of the How-To Book out on March 29, 2010.They are currently signed to PIAS recordings, same record label as Divine Comedy.

For once i'm seating at the top just in front of the mixing desk, The music is really 80's with a couple of Keyboards but not too much and just a bit of guitars only for the rythm , no soli. Usually I hate this kind of bands but Eagle Seagull has some great melodies and the singer really makes me think of Rick Ocasek from The Cars (a couple of people told me Robert Smith).
Each song is a bit different some are more ambient , others more rock with cool arrangements and violin for some of them. The bass is really forward in the mix.
just music tonight no talking at all between songs from the singer who had his hair down in front of his face for the whole set.
Really nice gig, they're playing the Fleche d' Or on April 29th.

Poor sales ?

Anto Dust @ Be There, Paris April 25th 2010

Anto Dust @ Be There
Paris, Ile St Louis April 25th 2010

It looks like the guitar is bigger

"Pint size" Anto Dust is playing the Be There a small bar on the Ile St Louis in the heart of Paris.
She has been linked to The Babyshambles as she's good friend with Drew and last time she played at The Motel in Paris Peter Doherty came for a couple of songs with her.
There's a young English guy: Dan Pickard opening.

Not too many people even though there were rumours that Pete might turn up. ( Well we left at 10:30 he wasn't there, he might have come later)
Incredible how lively she is, always smiling and telling jokes between songs , you can see she's really enjoying playing her songs.
She has a very tiny high voice.
First part of her set she's on the guitar, for the second part she's only on vocals leaving the guitar to her friend Dan Pickard for the better as she's much more confortable without playing.
As you can see she is very cute and seems to be very friendly.
She'll be singing@ Pop'in on April 27th and Truskel on 28th.

Divine Comedy @ Black Session on May 3rd CANCELLED

Neil @ Cité de la Musique Sept 2008

Divine Comedy was to play a Black session for C'est Lenoir on France Inter radio on May 3rd.
It has been cancelled by the radio as they were expecting a full live band and NOT Neil Hannon on his own.
What a bunch of fucking morons
Neil Hannon IS Divine Comedy.

French website A short site about The Divine comedy is trying to get Neil to play another show instead on the very same day, sign the petition HERE.

Hughes-Bonham-Bonamassa-Sherinian supergroup dead before birth ?

The supergroup originally know as Black Country with former Deep Purple bass player Glenn Hughes, Drummer Jason Bonham (Foreigner, Led Zeppelin) , Joe Bonamassa on guitar & Derek Sherinian on keyboards dead before birth ?

The album is completed and should be out in September.

Kevin Shirley who produced it, just wrote on his Facebook page: "Black Country looks to have imploded, with a completed album in the can! We set out as friends and lovers of music, to make something special. Then the managers got involved... and kept changing their wants, ultimately demanding EVERYTHING! I can't absolve all the musicians - but one I can completely absolve, is the one who actually has a career and has just been voted Best Guitarist in the World - who was 100% open ALL the way. And he doesn't ride on anyone's coattails... see below. Maybe they'll come to their senses.... I'm not holding my breath."

In other news:
  • Bret Michaels singer from Poison is in stable condition after beeing admitted in a LA hospital for a brain Hemorrhage. First reports were saying that he was in critical condition.
  • Ozzy Osbourne will play the iTunes fest @ London's famous RoundHouse on July 3rd.
  • A friend of mine saw Peter Doherty yesterday in Paris. Secret show ?

"Supertramp" is back with "70/10 European Tour" to celebrate 40 years

"Supertramp" is back in Europe to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of their first album.
They will play 35 shows in Europe starting in September including 6 in France:

Nantes October 12
Clermont-Ferrand ( 14)
Lyon ( 16)
Paris Bercy ( 18)
Toulouse ( 20)
Toulon ( 21)

Without Roger Hodgson or Dougie Thomson.

Roger Hodgson will be playing the Palais des Congres in Paris on Sept 24th ( Click on name for all dates).

Many people were expecting a FULL reunion but with what Roger said today about this "reunion" without him and asking "Supertramp"to remove his songs from the shows as Rick & Roger agreed many years ago when Roger left the band, I really doubt so.

Don McLean & Jessica Kilroy @ Cigale, Paris April 22nd 2010

Don McLean + Jessica Kilroy
@ Cigale, Paris April 22nd 2010
After seeing so many young folk ladies @ Fleche d'Or, Maroquinerie or @ Oliver's , it's time to see the godfather of all these Folkies Mr Don Mc Lean.
The guy's a living legend unfortunately like all living legends at one moment in their career, no one seems to bother, particularly in France as the balcony is closed and the all seated pit is far from beeing full.
He's playing London's Royal Albert Hall next month (45 Euros).
Once again ticket prices were very expensive betwen 55 & 75 Euros.
He may be a legend in the US of A. not in France.

As we're taking our seats on the first row dead center @ 8:00PM , the beautiful Jessica Kilroy is already playing. She has been dubbed the new Emmylou Harris.
Really good looking , pure voice and folk (with a bit of country-bluegrass) songs.
Nice starter before Don McLean
Jessica Kilroy may look freil but the lady's a killer, she used to be a firefighter and a rock climbing guide in her Montana state.
Short intermission before Don McLean
He should have played with his band but because of the Volcano they couldn't fly to Europe so he's on his own for the beginning of his European Tour.
I'm not really familiar with his repertoire apart from a couple of his hits but as he's alone on stage he has decided to play songs that he normally doesn't play.
He's starting the gig with a Buddy holly cover, he will play other covers (Dylan's "Masters of War", Woody Guthrie's "Hard travelling " on banjo , Elvis Presley's "That's all right mama") and maybe a few others.
Lots of folk songs including some written at the beginning of last century.
Between Johnny Cash & Neil Diamond or Elvis (when he was playing ballads on acoustic guitar).
He's telling lots of stories between songs.
Very enthousiastic audience
Of course he played ( a long version) of his Hit "American Pie" dedicated to Buddy Holly as the last song of his 110 min concert.
It's here on video sorry it's cut looong before the end !
Very nice evening, too bad we were so few @ La Cigale.

Signing stuff but not shaking hand ;-)

Port O' Brien @ Fleche d' Or, Paris April 20th 2010

Port O' Brien @ Fleche d' Or
(+ Laura Gibson & The Hillbilly Moon Explosion )
Paris April 20th 2010
After seeing Folk Lady Laura Gibson and hillbilly rockers The Hillbilly Moon Explosion playing their set( scroll down for review, Pics & video), It's 11PM and time for another different kind of Music with indie-folk-rock band Port O'Brien à la Fleche d'Or.

Before the storm

They look like a college radio band , are acting on stage as if they were playing in Nirvana but they don't play a heavy music.
A mix between folk and indie rock.

Funny they have a tiny sound specially the drums, the guy is banging on it like Dave Grohl but he has a really tiny sound. same with the guitar player.
Lots of girls in the audience as usual in this club and Port O'Brien has lots of fans as they know all the lyrics.
They have some really catchy songs and the atmosphere is lively down the pit.

The band asked to have everybody on stage for the last song ( as you can see on Pics).
very good 80 min+ set.

Girls wanna have fun !
